Noticing that both grommets that prevent the handbrake cable from chafing in their channel (behind the gbox and above the propshaft) are both gone. To avoid having to dismantle the cables I suppose a fuel pipe cut alongside can be inserted and then taped? Or is there a better fix?

You could always use an open grommet, cut in much the same way. This will have a good lip on to hold it in position.

Better still,
brand new grommets, remade in nylon 66, very much superior to the originals,
are available exclusively from TDC spares.
