Turning the engine the wrong way to time it is a bad idea. All the slack of the chain and gears are on the wrong side and it can be the ignition is now one tooth out. Always rotate running direction. When taking the oil cap off you can even see the cam timing mark and have the dizzy the right way in the first time.

If you can hear hissing, it's possible one of the breather hoses is split, that will upset it no end! And Jeroen, as usual, is dead right! You should never turn an engine backwards!

Having slept on this, my thoughts are that the only thing that has changed are the carb mounts so I'll be removing the carbs to see if there are any problems associated with the solid mounts. The battery's been on charge so I'm hoping to get back to it tonight when I get home from work. I have already heeded Jeroen's words of wisdom about turning the engine clockwise. The last thing I want to do is to make things worse by causing even more problems.

How did you seal the carb mounts, gaskets, or o rings?

Get it going on easy start or similar to decide if it's electrics, or fuel.

Just one further thought; If you dropped the carbs downwards and sideways away from the manifold to replace the rubber mounts did all the damper oil drain from the Stromberg piston rods ? If so the effect would be no damping while trying to start, so the pistons would rise right to the top and give a very weak mixture while trying to start.

Tony, I'm running SU HS4 carbs as per later 1850s. I kept the carbs upright all the time so I haven't lost any damper oil.

The problem is indeed with the carb mounts. I used some black sealant out of a tube with the mounts and when I removed the carbs most of it had gone. I don't think it works at all with the alloy mounts so I must have the absolute mother of air leaks. I've put in an order to TDC spares for a set of 4 gaskets. This should ensure a good air tight seal. I can't see what else it can be as it is the only thing I've changed.

Of course most of its gone, its sealant, as you tighten down the flanges it will squeeze out and form a very fine skin - thats what its supposed to do!
It wont be an air leak at the carbs either unless its a massive one.
Have your carbs got the fuel return / breather pipes connected to the top of the float chambers? If so, have you got them and the fuel lines transposed? Sounds daft but ive seen it done......

Unfortunately, TDC spares don't stock the gaskets, Rimmer's prices were a bit rich for me and Burlen was asking the same price for postage as the gaskets so I've ordered a set of 4 on eBay for just over a fiver including postage.

Bruce, it was the same sealant I'd used on the rubber mounts. Some back gasket sealant in a tube you can get from the local motor factor. For some reason it didn't work with the solid mounts. I have some blue Hylomar somewhere but I don't know if that would've worked either.

I got a sheet, A4 in size, of 1mm gasket paper, petrol resistant. Cut out the shapes to fit. Had plenty spare for other stuff like fuel pump gaskets for example. I went for 1mm for insulation. I Think it was £3 off ebay.

Much to my shame, I've done virtually nothing. I replaced both hard drives on my desktop PC (including an SSD) and I've fitted an SSD in my laptop too which has kept me busy. That is also the reason for my recent lack of activity on the forum.

Anyway, moving on, I bit the bullet and bought a few sets of trim clips on eBay.

I've redone the rear panel trim and fitted the bootlid badges so aside from the "feet" for the bottom of the D post trim, the back end is done.

I'd never thought about it before but the plate is appropriate for yesterday's date (NYE - New Year's Eve).
