Hi Dave, O.K. its started and basically running on points on the Delco dizzy. Good stuff. Now in that state can you get your strobe light on it, (disconnect the vac; advance) and check where the timing is. Go for about 11 deg BTDC on the 1850.
Then just as a check see if pot 4 gives the same answer and is illuminating the timing marks regularly.
Then have a look-see at pots 2 and 3 and see if the timing is now about 180 deg further round. And that the light is pulsing regularly and consistently.
If the car is O.K. at this point the reconnect the vac; advance and see if the timing has advanced a bit and is still pulsing O.K.
Then if things are still O.K. see what happens when you give it a few revs on all pots.
Let us know then if its O.K. we can look at fuel things.
Yes, I have to think twice about 25 thou and 0.25 mm as well on my set of gauges.
Tony.

Any updates Dave? I'm missing my fix from your thread for a while now.

It's very hard by now to find a way to have it running on a way what wasn't suggested here.

Surely if I can get DTR running after standing since 1992 then getting this running should be a doddle Dave.

Come on Dave, here is something to encourage you, paraphrased by me, originally by some bloke called Bill:

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
...
imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
...
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on,
...
show us here the mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start.
The game's afoot"

We're now into a new year and one of my resolutions is to get this car running again so it can go in for the dreaded MoT (I'm NOT going to wait for exemption which I think is a crazy idea). My main priority is to get the Citroen through the MoT which is due and then I can give my attention to the Dolly.

Give me a shout when you get round to looking at the motor and I'll see if I can pop down and give you a hand.

First order of business will be the battery. I suspect that it is fubar due to lack of use. I'll try to revive it but I'll buy a new one if I have to.

I got the multimeter across the battery terminals.

Oh dear, that isn't good. I've removed the battery and put it on charge. If it is toast (I'm 95% certain that it is) then I'll get a new battery ordered. I won't be any worse off if a charge doesn't work. My battery charger is definitely fubar so I'll invest in a new one. I've had to use Adam's battery charger.

I've had the battery on a 24 hour charge and I'm getting just over 13 volts across the terminals but this only means that it is taking a charge. The real test will be when I'm cranking the engine over. If the voltage drops below 10 volts when I'm operating the starter motor then it is definitely toast. The negative lead is also looking a bit ropey. Somebody kindly sent me a replacement but that is also a bit ropey (in a different place) so I'll buy a new one. I want to eliminate any potential problem areas when trying to get the engine running again.

Mike Charlton got me a good price on a replacement battery for the Spitfire a few (5?) years ago, might be worth asking him?

The battery is indeed toast. The voltage reading on my multimeter dropped below 10 volts when I was operating the starter motor which pretty much confirms it so it will be going down to the local recycling centre and I shall get a new one ordered. Sam, I shall PM Mike on the CT forum as the Spit uses the same battery.

James, this is what happens when you neglect the battery. If I'd checked it as regularly as the leisure battery in the caravan, I could've saved myself all this bother. THIS thread is quite timely for me with regards to the battery negative lead. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to the one that Rimmer Bros sells and I'm wondering if some "off the shelf" parts from a motor factor would work.
