Enough,
this is getting out of hand.

Reference the so called Lidl chargers, the ones on sale today are not Lidl branded.
Please provide links to the official reports so we can all learn which chargers were to blame, if indeed they were.

This is the charger I bought from Lidl:

It is the same type of charger as the CTEK ones. It is not the same charger but it operates on the same principles. It is what you would call a "smart" charger. I don't need to use it on the Dolly because I have just bought a new battery (unless it needs charging. I haven't checked it yet) but I will need one in the future because my old one has died and I may also need to charge the caravan's leisure battery before the next outing.

EDIT: I've just remembered the Lidl were selling a charger with a jump starter a few weeks back at £39.99. It was the Ultimate Speed ULG 12B3. I'm wondering if it was this one that was prone to catching fire.

That is just a charger and is nothing like the ctek one that I have. You dont understand the ctek charger/conditioner.

It doesnt matter if ther battery needs charging or not, with the ctek you leave it connected at all times whenever you are not using the car. They supply an adapter that you can connect to the battery and run through the grille so you dont have to open the bonnet if you like. This conditions the battery and maintains charge. They can also deep cycle a battery that has lost it charge, I have recovered a battery in this way.

For example, I used my spare battery to start Jonners car and get it onto my trailer. The battery still has plenty of charge and is less than a year old but I have still removed it from the car and connected it up. The charger will then mimic what happens when the battery is in use on the car to prevent it from diying.

If you let the battery go flat then charge it again and again you are just going to end up having to buy a new battery in 6 months.

Ihave heard nothing but good things about the lidl chargers.
And yes, it is a "smart" charger, and works in a similar way to the ctek ones.And it seems it lasts well according to users...

If I didn't have a commercial charger (very clever) I would be buying one...

James, I'll be checking the battery more often and it won't get left for months on end. If need be, I can remove the battery and charge it at my leisure so this type of charger will be fine for me. The same goes for the caravan battery.

I hoping to get the battery and my earth lead fitted tonight. A good earth will be condusive to a good spark. I want to turn my attention to the ignition system next. I reinstated the original Delco dizzy and I will stick with it. I now think that having the correct advance curve is more important that I thought before. I want to get it running on points and condenser so if anybody can recommend decent quality items I'm all ears. I was considering fitting my spare set of HS4s but I'll worry about that as soon as I've got the ignition side sorted out. The dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads are relatively new but I'll replace them if I have to.

Tonight's work has been scuppered by the weather and the fact that it took me FOUR hours to get home from work, a journey that normally takes me just over an hour. Snow isn't really conducive to spannering outside even though the carport is a couple of degrees warmer than being totally open to the elements. There is still some voltage in the old battery because I had to get some stuff out of the Dolly's boot on Sunday and the boot light was illuminated. It would be interesting to see what the voltage on the battery is.

The ctek charger if superb :D I got it as a free gift when taking out a subscription to practical classics mag many years ago :D
I would not have bought it due to the cost...... But if it ever packs up? I will buy another straight away.
It is in constant use day and night all year, and i swop it between 5 batteries that i have, one of which is over 7 years old and is still perfect :suntan: :suntan:

My vote goes to Varta batteries, since last week, when I took one off a 2002 Picasso and was surprised to read the date on it, it was the 15 year old factory original! I'm now going to give it a long slow charge and see if I can recover it, more for interest than because I need it!

Oh feck!

The new battery has gone walkies so that's set me back a bit. Mahesh, the boot light is definitely not illuminated when the boot is shut because the bulb is cold to the touch.

Matt, I very much doubt it. Some other stuff has also gone missing presumed stolen. Fortunately, the Dolomite is still in one piece. I think I'll try my smart charger on the old battery just for the hell of it. Amazingly, it is still holding a voltage. When I found out that the battery had been nicked last night, I just packed my tools up and went inside the house.

Take your old battery to the tip, it's goosed, end of life etc. Pretty much any battery can produce 12v or so after a charge but when called upon to do something useful it'll be useless. No amount of smart charging will change that fact.
