Holy Thread Revival Batman!!!

And so, after five years (I kid you not!) PYD made the uneasy journey by low-loader to Kent late last week.

This morning for the very first time I set eyes on her

So how is it?

Well its a bit dusty (inevitable really I suppose), it has no battery (but I have had it running and it's sweet), and it has absolutely no drive at all (gearbox coming out tomorrow hopefully). It still needs a tiny amount of welding and it needs a bloody good clean. But other than that it's pretty damn good. It's down here, it's still alive (just), and I have a Dolomite again.

Now to finish this restoration......

Hi Martin,

Wow that is a thread revival!

I have been sorting through some of my spares as I am losing the storage I have, I came across some rear fog lights, so if that one is busted give me a shout & I'll send you one.

Good news Martin, well done. I look forward to seeing the job progress.

Looks like a genuinely tidy car, i'm pleased you haven't given up on it. Now add a sorted SpitIII motor, overdrive or 5 speed, slightly better diff (3.63 should do) set the suspension up properly and upset some more boy racers!

All good.

Are you still going to fit a T9 gearbox Martin?

Ian.

Tony

Definitely up for a rear fog and its mounting bracket if you have one please - the nearside looks fine.

Ian,

I am going to have a crack at the first 5 speed ohv Dolomite, yes. We will see what happens.......

Sorry Martin, I charged the battery but to no avail, it took nothing. I actually fitted it the morning of collection, but when it proved totally flat, for some reason removed it again promptly tripping over it as your man turned the corner at the end of my road! It's now in my garden.

With your permission I will weigh it in next visit to the scrapyard; the beneficiary of such funds this year being Sunfields Childrens' Home in Clent...or I'll bring it along to the AGM for you to collect?

What happened to the fog light?

Al,

Absolutely no problems with weighing the battery in for a donation - do please crack on. I don't really know what happened to the rear fog as I was not there to see the car unloaded.

Mike,

I am only sorry it has taken this long to start finishing what you started.

Any further progress Martin? Glad you've finally got it home.

So, a year on, and time for an update.

Even though I had a spare gearbox (since sold) I decided to abort the Type 9 conversion. I simply could not find a way to get the conversion kit at any sort of reasonable price, and the DIY "kits" that you can fabricate yourself following guides on the various Spridget forums all didn't fit. So I canned the idea and went the traditional route of overdrive.

With the interior out and the box out, we discovered the lack of drive was a completely knackered clutch slave, and also that the long semi-rigid hose carrying fluid to the slave had a crack in it. So, new slave and hose later and we had an operational clutch (more of that later).

My mechanic Ken did the welding to the sill ends very neatly for me but we then discovered that what we thought were binding brakes from storage were in fact knackered discs and calipers and that all the rear end was binding too (moral of the lesson - old cars need to be used not laid up). In amongst all this I did countless foreign and domestic trips with work, ran a business and restored another classic!

Anyway, three weeks ago PYD went for an MOT. She failed. Brakes (uneven pressure), kaput rack, rack bushes, track rod ends and a few other bits. I have worked my way through these, but still wasn't happy about the clutch (told you we would get back to it) as it had appalling judder on take up. It made the car almost impossible to drive.

So, now the engine is out (again - but at least it facilitates access to the rack and mounts) and a new clutch being fitted.

Nearly there.......

The Super Flex bushes are the ones to get. I had them fitted when I replaced the rack last year.

I have refurbished calipers in stock Martin...

1300's have a rather pathetic size clutch.

You can upgrade to the spit1500/dolly 1500/1850 size one if you can find the right flywheel...

Worth doing if you are going to want to up the performance at all....or do much work in a hilly area.

I'm still staggered by the number of possible permutations of clutch slave, brackets, hoses and bell housing innards that can mess the clutch
action up on ohv cars.

Jon,

This car actually already has the bigger 1500 flywheel and clutch assembly. We now have the lump out and there is no sign of oil contamination but the springs are dead stiff so we are changing the complete clutch kit anyway.

It won't be long now hopefully!
