Well JPB if you really do have a cast iron slant 4 water pump cover then you have something I have never seen before...

Extract the studs and try the radial levering. It will come off...you can also wiggle it up and down, but with more force than wiggling implies...
using the main hose outlet. ive also been known to use a screwdriver as a wedge...

Its all in the thread of doom...which should really be a "how to" or FAQ.

:scratchin: One I could have been mistaken about, but the one on the car plus the spare one are both the same. I had to recut the thread for the heater takeoff in one of them and apart from the colour and the weight, cast iron feels quite different when you drill it.

I might have to pop into work and look again though, since there's every likelihood that you're correct. Shame, I was hoping to avoid the place until the freshers are in. :|

You've still got the stuck brass cage, dismantling and reassembly to look forward to then!

Make sure you get the underside of the impellor machined smooth or the new seal will not work. Should be plenty of threads on the forum about how to do this. Patience and not too much force will ensure the job is a good one. It' s a pig of a job, done it twice myself. I'd ditch your iron cover and studs though of you can. Aluminium one was original and probably better for it, iron just corrodes itself to everything. Remebering though you'll need a 6 vane cover to go with a 6 vane pump and vice versa.

Errrr... How many slant owners who've had HGs to change are now wishing that were the case?
Or Reliant owners; anyone, in fact, who ever tried to remove an alloy head from steel studs....

Yes as someone who recently sheard two steel studs that were screwed into cast iron/aluminium respectively you do have a point. Plastic is the way to go, damn electrolitic corrosion.

Finally Got round to gearing up for another go at pump removal today seeing how I finally got some spare time and a decent day of sunshine.

With a gear puller the pump eventully came out of the hole minus the brass cage.

So off to b&Q this morning I went to get a piece of flat bar and make me a tool.

When I returned my good lady wife Lady Tolly greated me with a rather cheeky grin on her face brandishing the brass cage!!! :D

she had managed to fashon a removal tool out of a large bolt and a piece of old radio ariel and with a couple of turns of a nut on the bolt it popped out of the hole.
So tomorrows job will be to clean down the engine and paint it .

I know John

I am blessed with my good lady, when she had her viva 1300gls she changed the engine mostly on her own and did all her own servicing and maintance :D .

She loves getting stuck in on cars

Well today the weather was nice and dry and sunny so I decided to do a few little jobs on the Tolly.

First was to sift through the box of goodies that I recived from Paddocks which included a replacement water pump cover, and metal water transfer pipe.

Seeing how they were secondhand I decided to clean them up with some light emery paper and give them both a very generous coat of engine enamael.

Next I moved onto the inletmanifold and removed about a ton of hidious gasket sealer and filthy gunk.

After this was done I decided to give the engine block another coat of engine enamel.

So now I am just awaiting the arrival of my new pump courtesy of mikeyb and hopefully The Little White Tolly should be hitting the road again :D
