Given how good POE was to start with its kind of a shame to put chavvy wide arches on it when a more journeyman car would
have done the job as a track weapon.

Really nice low mileage original cars with good history are hardly 2 a penny these days....and now there is one less.

My 2 cents...

Sorry Jonners - POE was and is crap. She was supposed to have been a proper car but she's not a patch on Mart's or many of the others restorations, she's had more blow jobs than a porn star and has been welded and bodged all over the place. As I originally said I should have walked away but was a prat. Anyway she's getting some proper bodging done now :)

I could not sell her, she'd need a proper job doing and I like the idea of a smartish - albeit crap car.

The Toledo I bought from Jeanette is a proper car - that I'd have loved to Sprint - and may well do - but she's lovely so gets well and truly looked after. I should do a little write up about her.

And, if POE was so blooming good, why'd you think I put her in the restoration threads. You wazzok, she's not a really nice low mileage car. She's not got the original engine, box - probably doors. I know you vouched for the car when I bought it - but you was wrong Rodney.

Anyway - back to POE. She's looking a bit better now :)

And a few more pics

I need to MOT her this week as she's due on track in a few days, hope she doesn't visit the kitty litter too often.

Fair enough.

IIRC the PO brought it round to mine a few years ago when I had a white one on ebay. Lived in Hersham near Walton on Thames IIRC.

It lookied very nice then, but I only gave it a quick look over and not as a prospective purchase. Guess I believed the hype about it being a 10k Sprint then,
and now you now know better having actually bitten the bullet.

Good luck with it then....and enjoy it - that's the main thing.

Absolutely love it Ben!

I would go down this route but knowing that you have GT6 front hubs on just after I have paid for a Trackerjack set up means I'm going to leave it for the time being!

Have you had it on the road now Ben? How's it handle?

You should indeed sir...

I remember seeing POE when it was in Hersham (I live just around the corner from that house) and it 'looked' stunning... I have to say it looks flippin' awesome now and if it needed so much doing to it giving it a little bit of a 'beefing up' is well and truly the right thing to do...!!! I'm all for originality but this looks glorious...

Glad I saw it in pictures first.....not driving on the road! Would have probably crashed rubber necking at it.

Looks fantastic - hope the engine mods planned make sure it goes as well as it looks.

Hah egg on my face there then. Should have read the blog before posting my irrelevant comments....

All the best with it.....

How heavy is the steering with such wide rubber? You've actually doubled the width over a std 1850 there....

No probs Jonners, the steering is actually pretty light, but I'm used to the Toledo's steering as my everyday (with a Sprint steering wheel, the Toledo one is a joke), so whilst the Toledo is a one hand twiddle, the Sprint is a two hand twiddle. I've been moving it around here and to be honest I only drove it back from Rob's with 7x13's all round and that's about 3 miles. Sorry to say, on that drive it felt horrible :(
It wanted to follow every contour in the road.

As POE was not on the road (no MOT, and I was still playing with bits) and I had a track day booked we took Rob's race Dolly - that's got some fat rubber and drove lovely. I say lovely on a nice smooth track, as a passenger on normal roads at the Manx classic it was horrible with all the rose joints. But on track it was superb, that gave me a lot of confidence that we can iron out any handling problems. Rob's car was setup for hill climbs and he felt the additional negative camber helped on track. POE's suspension was all set to standard before my Spa trip, where she felt lovely on the 175's.

I took my dad out in Rob's car, and after having a few laps in a McLaren 650s and Caroline's monster - we both agreed they are faster but the Dolly was far more fun. And boy can Rob's Dolly go - it accelerates in 4th better than POE does in 2nd.

I want POE to be nice to drive on road and track, so with a few mates who know a damn site more than me about suspension setup I'm sure we'll get her feeling good. Then finally I'll play with the engine.

Shaun - I was planning on putting standard hubs back on with some TJ brakes, I don't think I'd get 8x13's on the front with the ST setup (GT6 hubs) - I'll get a set made up and try them and let you know. I can use either the ST or the TJ setup on the Toledo so they won't go to waste.

I'll look forward to seeing how you get on....still considering arches but concerned about not filling the front arches due to having too narrow a front wheel...

FWIW I stick to 185/70's on the std wheels for a nice road feel.

Think we had 195/60's on SFB with std wheels and the tramlining could be disconcerting on some roads.

Quick update, POE went straight through the MOT with no advisories as expected, and I really didn't like the nervous front end. I dropped some stuff up to Rob and had a chat about the tracking, Rod advised slightly toed in, which off the tops of our heads is about standard, when I got home I put the tracking gauges on and she was slightly toed in.

I said to Caroline - give the steering a gentle wiggle will you and the joint that attaches to the steering rack has a tiny bit of play. We wipped that off and replaced with one of the uprated ones I had on stock, I little bit of tiddlypomming to the shaft to get it to fit nicely and now she drives lovely. A silly bit of play in the column was the only problem. Didn't get my trims sorted out, but at least she drives lovely now :)

The trim is all on, Mot'd and taxed so POE's back where she belongs.

Had a great day, thanks mainly due to Jack Rawles (young Ginetta race driver) who we asked along for the day - 1st pic - he gave me a few tips which meant that third could only be used in the chicane and lavant corner, everywhere else was 4th/4th OD - so much more pace, along with the soft Kumo track day tyres meant foot to the floor and I think we overtook everything we were out with (I did let an Aston past, for one lap, then he let me past again).

As the other part of the rear arch was nicely prepared I finally got around to stripping away all the old underseal and properly painting the inner arch.

Stripped.

Degreased and metal ready applied.

POR'd

And then stone chipped and then matt blacked.

Still got to finish off the outer arch to paintwork, polish the paint where I'd ultra fine scotch brighted it and then apply the coach stripe.

Then that'll be last winters job complete. I know, never rush a job.

POE oh POE what shall I do with you?

I've not got time to tinker, and the best eforts of people far better than me don't get near to the torque the 1UZFE lump we put in the Scim has from 1k revs.

Caroline's 911 is as quick as modern McLaren's, and with the new fuel system (fitted last week) should see them off ;)

POE is fun, but to make her proper fun will ruin the Sprint's docility.

A Chevy LS1 it has to be. If people can get Rover V8's and Stag lumps in the Dolly engine bay, a carb'd LS1 will fit. When I say fit, I mean squeeze.

POE, forget about your highly strung four cylinder dreams. You'll contine to get thrashed at every opportunity, but we'll get you a nice new LS1, gearbox, axle and brakes. After all said and done, a new crate LS1 engine costs less than we paid for the 911's Akrapovich exhaust!

POE - watch out sunshine, you're about to be going into the odd hedge backwards :)

And that does mean, give the job to some bugger who can get it done ;)
