19 day resto of a 1974 1850 Auto.

#1 Post by Nathan Mwk 627G »

Sitting a home one night I received a phone call from Tom (tom 16v) on the forum, he had spotted a car on Ebay and was keen to go and have a look at it, the car in question was a 1974 dolomite 1850 Auto with 21000 on the clock, it was only local so we plodded over, the car had been off the road and sat in a feild since 2009, 2 ft of grass all around it and covered in moss, apart from a spin around the field it hadn't moved.....The car was solid, only a small amount of rot on the A post, lower n/s wing...all the other rot spots were solid, it even had its original wheel arches......a deal was struck and the car was collected a week later

we booked it in for a mot at our usual mot station and drove the car there complete with moss, grass and general crap all over it, the old girl failed but only on bottom ball joints and a sticky front brake, with the work done we took it down 2 days later where it gained a MOT

Now the plan was to give this car to Toms dad as a supprise birthday present as he once had a honeysuckle dolly when Tom was a small boy, his dads Birthday isn't till December so we lads of time......so we thought.

Tom had managed to succure himself a Job in Scotland for 12 months, with me on holiday and Toms due Leaving date looming it gave us 19 days to get the car ready!!

Ill let the photos do the talking from now on!!

Now this is where the s**t hit the fan, someone had done something wrong and the paint wouldnt harden, it supposed to be touch dry in 16hrs, yet four days later it was still sticky, so the decision was made to fully strip the car and start again......

That's fantastic work and a great-looking car too. Interesting to see that it has the HL-style wheel trims, exhaust at the right and a Sprint rear screen rubber (with chrome trim rather than a solid one). There's another car of similar age somewhere on the forum that also has HL wheel trims and the exhaust on the right, presumably Triumph ran out of Dolomite trim bits and exhaust systems so started using HL parts before HLs were made?

'Tis a lovely thing.

Cheers guys,

John your right, we prefered the early trims and we think they set the car off especially with the colour, also the rear screen trim again you are right, the original was solid so Tom tried to get a new one but couldn't source one so we had to go with what you see!!

what a lovely car :eyes4u: great job done guys lord only nows were this car would have ended up and look at it now, our 1850 auto is 1974 and came with the early hubcaps, also the exhaust is on the left,so yours must be a late 74 verging on the hl model wirh later hubcaps exhaust on the right and front spoiler ,the earlier hubcaps look much nicer and really suit it :D

To be fair, Tom, Nathan and Owen did the majority of the hard work, with Yvonne doing a superb job of the door cappings.

Also, cos I cant quite keep up with the youngsters these days, I did knock off at half ten on Saturday, leaving Tom and Nathan to finish the beast! I know, I'm a lightweight. :) :)

However, doesn't it look the business!

PS Message to Tom, it took 2 weeks to get the Dinitrol of the bottom of the bath! However, I don't think the bath will rot out for a long time!

I can only echo what the others have already said. Good to see another 1850 auto back on the road.

Do you fancy doing mine Nath? :D
