Dear Dolomite enthusiasts,

My name is Gijs van Houtum and just owner of two dolomites, an 1850 and a Sprint.
The dolomite am I driving every day and the Sprint is in restoration.

The engine of the sprint has been taken apart totally and the crankshaft, cylinder bores etc are measured. The results were a bit disappointing.

Cylinder bores(mm):
1: 90.58 and 90.59
2: 90.58 and 90.60
3: 90.59 and 90.60
4: 90.58 and 90.58

So the block has been bored before to 90.55 and worn out again.

The pistons are Mahle and in medium condition..

Crankshaft (mm):
The main cranks(five) are all 54.00mm . They pass the fabric specs.
Then the conrod cranks.

1: 44.43
2” 44.44
3: 44.44
4: 44.44

This is WAY of spec. The tolerance is allowed to be 44.45 to 44.463. So it 0.02 of target.

My Local engine rebuilder told me he could regrind the crankshaft and fit other bearing caps. But it will cost me 275 euro. This is very expensive to me.

Then he could also bore the cylinders to 90.80mm and fit new pistons with two oversizes. This would cost me even more. 600 Euros for pistons, 250 euro for boring the cylinders.

I could also just fit it and see where it ends.

So what would you dolomite enthusiasts do?

Many thanks,

Gijs van Houtum

Whatever you do oversize pistons are expensive. Maybe you could get a used but good condition standard bore engine? Though even that you'd want to strip and inspect prior to fitting. Either way it takes lots of £££'s or indeed €€€'s

Hallo Gijs, we’ve met at the Dutch National Triumph Day July 3th. I was in my TR7 but had to leave earlier. I think we are in this picture.

Nice to hear your Dolomite 1850 is running well!

About your Sprint engine: there are many ways to rebuild your engine. On the cheap, you could search for a 100-euro TR7 engine and use the bottom end (which has exactly the same block, crank and rods). After checking over, you can then build it up using your Sprint pistons, 16V head and timing gear.

If you want to retain your original engine, another option is to re-sleeve the block with liners so the bores will be back to standard piston size (you may find it easier to find std size pistons than oversize).

Last option could be a brand new 1850 block (see : Rimmers), re-sleeve to Sprint piston size (block is the same) and find new std Mahle Sprint pistons. That’s what I did 8-)

I’ll contact you offline, as I have some history of your Sprint and might know a TR7 engine for sale…

And another thing: what’s a Restoration thread without pictures ;-)

This is my dolomite 1850 in driving condition. This picture is taken in August when i went to Kroatia on holiday.. I haven't got pictures of the LPG part.. But what i can say is that it is an STAKO circular tank with a Vialle vaporizer.. No Problem.. Mileage of 1L : 9km.

wow, fantastic work and welcome to the forum Gijs, great to see the work you have done on the cars and the pictures are very cool.

I'm no expert on piston sizes and so on and I notice you have put a request up for some oversize pistons, but I was surprised at how cheap and effective it was to get a cylinder resleeved. I don't know about postage costs and the logic of buying pistons from Australia, but Sprintparts sold me my new pistons.

Looks like you have everything under control. Are you going to sort out the 16V head yourself or get a workshop to set up the clearances ?

GEWELDIG ! --- GREAT JOB

Great to see yet two more Dutch Dollies being restored and preserved...!
I have some previous owner history and heritage certificate info (for the 1850) from the Dutch Dolomite register for your cars, and some old 'for sale' pics - contact me if you're interested: dolomite [at] triumph.nl !
I'll be watching this topic closely and would like to stay in touch!

Yesterday i opened my second sprint engine which came as an extra with the price when i bought the cars.
I hoped the pistons were in good condition and .508. The result is that they are .508(stands on top of pistons) but the condition is very bad.
