When should the starter spacers be fitted? I seem to have acquired a few.

Cheers.

TBH I was hoping someone could enlighten me as well. I have only replaced it as that's where it was.

When I replaced the starter on ADA I forgot to refit the spacer first time around and the damn starter wouldn't disengage when the engine fired!
That had me flummoxed to say the least until I noticed the spacer on the garage floor! Fitted it and the problem was gone.

It must depend on the range of tolerances that each flywheel and starter combination can tolerate and bearing in mind that it may not be the first starter motor change you may end up needing a new spacer or having to remove one at some point during subsequent changes.

But how you know upfront whether one should be fitted or not --- who knows, but having to skin knuckles twice is a little irritating.

Mart, what did you paint the servo with? I painted mine with Chassis Black Gloss and I'm just not that convinced with the finish, it's not particularly smooth. Ideally looking for glossy and smooth but hard wearing.

Sorry Mark I missed this post. I take the servo back to bare metal, give it a coat of primer, leave it for at least 24 hours then apply Black Gloss from a rattle can. Use 2000 grit to flatten & keep adding coats & flatting 'til you're satisfied with the finish.

I had the day off today as I knew I'd be knackered after yesterdays event at Gaydon. I had a lazy morning & didn't manage to get to the garage until this afternoon, with a bit of self motivation.

I decided it's time for the axle & rear suspension to come off...

I noticed it had been leaking from the pinion shaft so that's one job to do at the weekend. Also there is fluid in the nearside brake drum. Not sure whether it's diff. oil or brake fluid yet. Will investigate another time. I sheared off the end of one of the tie bars which is a pita, I think I have spare somewhere.

The leak in the N/S brake drum was the axle oil seal. So I fitted new ones on both sides (front gearbox oil seals) and the pinion seal. The rear axle is now all painted & back on the car...

Mary got on with the rear parcel shelf & foot well side pieces...

As far as I can tell, for both 1850s and Sprints there are "early" and "late" starters and only the later types used spacers.
The spacer being necessary because of a redesigned starter nose piece.

We decided to fit the vinyl roof today. We did it quite a bit quicker than normal and I think it's the best one we've done so far. Thanks to a couple of pointers from Martin at Martrim when we spoke with him at the NEC last year.

It's hard to see from the pic but the roof has been cleaned & rubbed over with an abrasive sheet as a key for the glue...

Image

...finished. Sorry, it got a bit intense putting the vinyl on & I forgot to take photos of our progress. Still, you can always look back at last years or the year before or the year before that.... :D

You may notice that a few other bits & pieces have gradually been reunited with the car.

I put the carbies on yesterday evening...

Image

I then coated the wooden bits of the dash in paint stripper & left them overnight. A lot of the varnish came off but I still had to spend another hour or so with the heat gun & scraper this evening...

Been hard at it again this weekend. I had to take the front shocks off as I remembered I'd forgotten to put the spacer washers on the top plate. Mary has been busy with the interior. We fitted the 'D' post vinyls, put in the rear seat, some rear trim and rear lights. I've also cleaned up the front light fittings, alternator, fitted the steering column etc.

Are those spacers important ? Are they like thick washers ? One of my prevoius sprints had them but my current one has not, cracking resto as normal i shall be keeping an eye on it when finished.
