They are easy to rebuild.I have a large box full of stripped starters. And dont forget that the 1300 starter is unique no other starter will work.

It may, iv never tried but its the rotation that the starter spins that is unique on a 1300fwd.

Affectively backwards compared to a conventional starter.

The reason for this is that the 1300 doesn't have a conventional flywheel like most cars. There is a separate toothed ring gear at the front of the engine on which the starter pinion engages. Because the starter is at the front of the engine and is facing in the opposite direction it rotates in the opposite direction as well.

Hope this helps.

You could try this chap;

He broke up a T1300 recently, has lots of parts for sale?

After rebuilding the starter at home but it still struggling I have bitten the bullet and sent it to be refurbed.
I have been over to the barn and taken the car for runs around the farm and apart from the tracking being out, a small rattle at a particular rpm from the clutch area, and the temp gauge not working, all is as it should be.
The new engine runs well, obviously we can't test it for another 500 miles or so but it picks up very well with minimal throttle.

The next thing on the list whilst I wait for the starter to be fixed, is the paint work.
Whilst it's never going to be good because it has been resprayed badly in the past, I wanted to see what was under there!
So I did some investigating.
One grotty looking panel;

What appears to be filler. Doh! Look at the shut line on that door too
Image

You can clearly see the layers of paint here. The little dot is the base, then the factory white, then moving outwards, another layer of primer followed by more paint. Down the front is where I have covered up some bare metal left by the previous owner so ignore that. It the top coat of paint that is the worst. Around sharp edges like then end of the roofline or the corners of doors it is literally falling off!

Moving round to the bootlid. I did the right half as it is worst.

In this one you can clearly see the original paint at the top, and the respray paint at the bottom which has peeled.

I have been flatting this back with 400 grit followed by 800 so excuse the poor finish at the moment.
I plan to flat the whole car back then mop to leave a presentable (shiny) finish. The repaired sections will then probably be even more obvious but I guess you could call that history or patina! Then I can decide where to go with it whilst I get saving for a respray!

News from the Starter motor man is that he has got me a brand new unit. I am worried it is the wrong one, but he insists it turns clockwise so fingers crossed!

The paintwork is looking much better already.

Is the car a 1300TC? I noticed the twin SUs but I can't see any TC badges. The 1300fwd originally had a single Stromberg.

It's not a TC, just had the carbs fitted by the previous owner. I am looking forward to seeing what the engine can do, but running in period first! :roll:

It's easy to do a bench test with a jump pack or battery to check the rotation.
How much is he charging for a 'new' starter?

:D

He wants £92 delivered which included collection of my old starter. I also requested him to return my old one as he is not using it which would be a result.
