Changing the subject, I wonder what members views are on the pros and cons of dipping the body, as opposed to media blasting? I have read various threads and still not sure. Currently my car is awaiting blasting. My main worry with this is that I can't see how it can remove corrosion in hidden areas. Also, what's the best way to go with rust proofing? If dipped, I understand the body gets the same protection as modern cars. and this will get to all the hidden areas. If blasted and painted, is something like waxoil still the way to go?

That Sprint in the 2nd photo which I posted was MikeyB's which had been dipped and e-coated at SPL. There's another Sprint resto which has also had the same treatment from SPL. They are the first 2 on the list in the "Epic Sprint restoration threads" sticky thread at the top of this section.

Here's a pic of the chassis number, the second 1 looks like an afterthought, but must be deliberate, so I'm inclined to go with 1114. That's still early enough!

The top plate is the chassis plate. Looks like yours is/was a non-overdrive model, which makes sense as being an early Sprint O/D was an option. I'm not sure what the other plate is but all the Dollies have them.

I was in the loft so I dug out the rear light units and took a photo.

They're definitely in better condition than yours. They came off my 1850 because I dropped my trolley jack when I was taking it out of the boot and ended up damaging one of the reverse light lenses.

The other plate is the body ID. This was used in the factory during the manufacturing and assembly to distinguish the individual models
and thereby ensure they ended up with the correct running gear, trim etc.

The Commission Numbers were only allocated once the cars were completed.

It is indeed a non overdrive model. I've decided to keep it like that. Not sure whether I'll like it, being used to 6 speed gearboxes!

Thanks Toledo Man, much appreciated. My spare set seem to have polished up nicely and just need a little paint on the reflectors so I am okay for now.

However...if anyone has a workshop manual (I do have a Haynes) or a parts catalog for sale that would great. The disadvantage with buying a car that has been partially dismantled is that you don't get to see how it all came apart. If it was me I'd have taken loads of pics and kept the nuts and bolts together and labeled with each item. Alas... :(

Parts catalogues & factory workshop manuals are HERE.

Enjoy!

Edit: I've been going through some back issues of DM and in issue 58 (June/July 1996) your car was featured. It had been bought by an Ian Wallace of Lowestoft with only 20,000 miles on the clock. It had been laid up for 2 years following the death of the previous owner who was also from Suffolk. The commission number is indeed VA1114 so the Heritage certificate you have is for the wrong car.

Dave,
That seems to tie in with the little bit of history that came with the car. I don't suppose back issues that far back are available! I'd be really interested to see a photocopy if you get the chance.

My car has now been stripped ready for media blasting which should hopefully happen in the next few weeks. The suspension parts are going off to be powder coated in the meantime. Fingers crossed it looks as solid when down to bare metal!

I can scan the relevant pages for you. I recommend that you fit Super Flex bushes when you come to reassemble the suspension and subframe. I spent over £100 on Super Flex bushes recently and they're worth every penny. They're literally fit-and-forget.

My Daily (an Insignia) is a 6 speed too but i find Dollys 4 speed thoroughly refreshing in its correctness :-) Hope you and the car are well: looks like its coming on a treat.

Kind Regards

Russell.

My car is now back from the blasters. To my untrained eye it looks pretty good and the body shop say so too. A new front panel is needed and also work to the roof, boot floor, sills (of course) and some other areas. I am awaiting the full report...

The sub-frame is now powder coated and the brake components have been refurbished.

I am hoping to see the shell painted in the next few months so I can start the long haul of putting it back together...
