I have one of those but the automec kits have then ends on and they only work on bare coils.

I've finished forming the hoses, am a bit concerned about the front left as it came up a bit short. I have formed it bang on accurately as well. It looks like the hose was cut short, I'll try and fit it and see how it is, I may be able to adjust it out but I think I may have to get automec to send me another hose about 2cm longer though.

Does anyone have a heater control cable, part number 629170?

Or does a Stag one fit?

Mine broke off at the clamp.

I sympathise with you and the brake lines. Was probably my least favourite job of the restoration so far. Did the front calliper ones last week and was happy with one, not happy with the other one so will need to redo it!

How long should it be?

I've just taken one off a heater matrix that has been sitting around for a while and it measures 94.5 cm

If it is any use to you, I'll leave it on the bootlid of the brown Sprint on the drive for Saturday morning; I'm afraid my drugs will still be having full effect at 6 am!

There's often enough slack in the cable for you to just cut back the outer cable a bit and refit this. Unless, of course, it's been done before!

On brake pipes you have my sympathy too, but only a little of it! Many years ago (at least 30) I invested a horrific amount of money, about £150, on a Sykes Pickavent professional kit that does all diameters of pipe up to 3/8", so I can make LPG pipes in 6, 8 and 10mm, diesel injector pipes, 1/4" and 5/16" fuel pipes, Lucas windscreen wiper rack guide tubes, and of course brake pipes in both 3/16" AND 4.75mm. Long practice with this means every pipe is the correct length and custom pipes (like nearly every one on the Carledo) are a doddle! And after all this time and many thousands of flares, it still works perfectly! Maybe it WAS a wise investment!

Perhaps I should start making sets for Dolomites and marketing them on here! There's only really 4 choices, Sprint in single and dual circuit and "everything else" in single and dual. Oh and drum front brake Toledo, but that's just 2 extra short pipes on kit 3.

Steve

Thanks Alun, I'll find out how long a Stag one is, Defenders used the same cable so I may be able to source some for the club.

I have one of those flaring tools so I have cut down the long sections and Automec have sent me a replacement left front section which was just way too short, they apologised, it was a production error. I just hate doing brake lines mainly because I have impossibly high standards. I cant stand to see cars with wavy brake lines, it still has to be neat and tidy! 8)

I'm just trying to treat the rust on the bulkhead below the servo so I can get the steering back in and the car off the trailer, it's not the best weather for painting at the moment.

Some years ago in the Members section, I offered to do just that, but the pipe was to be Kunifer only, no copper option.
The cost inc. postage is a bit under £30 for a complete car set.
Obviously I can supply individual pipes too.

Given that the uptake of this offer to date has been precisely one,
it is perhaps fair to describe the response as underwhelming.

I have a set of GWC1502 cylinders with a 17.8mm bore, that corresponds to whats in my parts book for a single line braked car.

Is this correct?

EDIT: Nope, I'm just confusing myself with a parts book that has conflicting information. 17.8mm should be for an early 1850 up to comm WF68200 unless I'm going mad/blind!!

17.8mm is 11/16" in real measurement unless i've done my sums wrong. I thought the Sprint/1850 rear cylinders only came in 5/8" or 3/4" (roughly 16 or 19mm)

Ah well, every day a school day!

I say I have a pair of GWC1502 cylinders with a 17.8mm bore, that's what it says on the package.

Hmmm, given your superior knowledge and expertise in this and life in general Steve I'm inclined to think you're right.

Best thing for me to do is this afternoon when I have taken the car off of Sir Nicholas' trailer take the cylinders out, strip them and measure them, have to get the rear hoses off anyway.

Sorry, haven't had the wheel cylinders off yet. Had to collect my new rear wheel for Sundays race after I dinged the rim a bit on the old one!

Image

Ouch!!

I have been able to treat the rust on the bulkhead and respray it, I just need to re-glue the bulkhead pad on now and I can refit the brakes.

Image

I removed the inlet manifold to allow me to get one of the brake lines out without bending it. Not something that worried me as as far as I could see it had to come off to replace some of the perished water hoses. Problem is that the return pipe has seen better days, some 1/2" tube and a pipe bender later and I should have a nice new one so watch this space!

Other than that all the brake lines bar the rear axle are formed and ready to be fitted, the rad was leaking and has gone to Bagshot Radiators to be rebuilt, I have a spare to go in for now. I have all the hoses ready to go, tyres will be done in April at the same time as the Discos front tyres the only thing outstanding is the welding, an exhaust and the MOT!

She's looking pretty good off the trailer!

So whats been happening then...

Bulkhead pad is back on now that the paint is dry. I have also refitted the heater, washer and servo. Servo has had a coat of paint to protect it, nothing special it was just very rusty. The fusebox was soaked in some jewellery cleaner and has come up very well, a new voltage regulator has been fitted.

Image

Image

All of the new brake lines are now fitted front to back except the diff.

Image

Image

Image

I'm just working on the rear brakes now, unfortunately the rear drums were badly scored so they will now have to be replaced. I'll finish them before refitting the prop.

Image

The steering knuckle had been rebuilt with superflex bushes and the bulkhead bush replaced.

Image

Just waiting for the rad and some brake parts now before I'll start the welding.

Do have to think about an exhaust.

Provisional date for the MOT is 13th May.

Onwards!!!
