Is chassis mounting the engine worth it and what are the real advantages to this? or is it just better to do something similar to the group 2 mountings. The plan is also to move the engine back a few inches at the same time.
Cheers Neil

Hi Neil,

My only thoughts are that if you intend to solid mount a Dolomite motor to the subframe, make certain that all your fillings are tight, because I think that they will shaken from your teeth.

There is no real advantage in chassis mounting the engine (you still mount the engine on rubber mounts) as the subframe is quite large on a dolomite, and unlikly to get bent, also the supension all unbolts as a complete side from the subframe. The escort and sunbeam rally cars had there engines mounted on the chassis but they only had a crossmember with the lower suspension arms and rack mounted directly on it, not a big subframe. The whole idea was to make replacing a damaged one very quick.

Yes It will still still use rubber mountings although they will be stiffer than the origonals. The only real advantage I could think of for being able to take the subframe off whilst leaving the engine was for changing the steering rack but in reality how often is that likely to be needed. Think I will most likely make new mountings to the subframe.
Also I notice on the pics of the group two subframe that they cut the rear cross member off of the subframe, I pressume to allow the gearbox to clear as it looks as if the engine has been shifted back a good few inches. would this not be a bad idea from the point of view of flex?

cheers

They wouldn't have done it if it wasn't worth it - I guess if you move the engine back far enough the gearbox is going to be putting most of its weight onto the gearbox crossmember anyway, so no need for the extra.

When I rebuilt the broadspeed Group 2 car I had to recreate the subframe from the homologation paper photographs. I moved the engine back and down. the mountings were made from some rear lower arms with uprated bushes.. The exercise also involved remaking the sump & the oil pick up pipe and the exhaust. The whole job probably took 2 weeks work & was only done to make the car correct for originality, certainly not worth doing for anything other than a race car. Also when moved back it is not possible to run an overdrive gearbox as the crossmember fouls the o/d unit. I fitted a 5 speed close ratio SD1 box to the car which according to some period write ups on the car, was installed at the time.

Regards.

This is something that I have certainly considered in doing. Does anyone know why this section is there, is it left over from the FWD days?

I am not certain if under the rules that we run under if I am allowed to remove this section of subframe, but I had thought of making it bolt in to aid gearbox or exhaust removal.

I have made mine removeable a number of years ago. It does make gearbox removal much easier. You can leave the tunnel in.

Regards.
