Acquired RVL 17L last year and am looking to join in some competitions, hill climbs, sprints and perhaps rally/track events, if we get "Dolly" into shape.
She has sat in a barn for 5 - 6 years and needs some tlc in most areas, but seems sound. Apparently last competed in 2007 in Welsh Rally.
I would like to have any advise on events to begin with, slowly, as have not competed to date and the idea is to get my 18 year old son involved as well. Start him early!
Also plenty of advice welcome for the set up and work that we are going to need to do over the coming months, where to go for spares, specialist work/advise and the odd reassuring meeting of people who have done it all before and there is an end in sight! :roll:

Hi Roger and welcome to the Forum!

The TDC doesn't run any competition events of its own, but Club Triumph and the TR register do. The TR mob do a hill climb and sprint championship every year which Dolomites are welcomed into, as well as a couple of trackdays, the next of which is at Castle Coombe on the 12th April, probably too soon for you, but if you are not too far away, it might be worth coming for a look! Club Triumph do the round Britain reliability run (Essex-John-O-Groats-Lands End-Essex in 48 Hrs) every other year and also a Ten countries run. I think they do some other compo events too.

There are quite a few knowledgeable people on here with competition minded cars and plenty of experience, just ask away!

Many thanks for the welcome Steve. All sounds encouraging, we may need it!
I had a quick look at the Castle Coombe event and it looks as though it was sold out some time ago.
I shall try to get down there for a "mooch" and general chin wag anyway.

Welcome to the world of motorsport!

My advice is to find a local competitive car club and speak to them about your plans. Most seem to be good at encouraging "noobies" There is certainly one at Bedford who have links with CT
Another thought is that CT do a few navigational rallies each year, and you are well placed(ish) to take part. They have a3 classes: beginners (given a marked map and easy instructions) Novice (just clues) and expert (difficult clues)
Many of the local clubs do something similar.

CT also organise an autosolo, there is one near oxford on May 8th. large area of tarmac, cones with arrows and get round the course as fast as possible. Sounds easy, (difficult to be very fast!) and great fun. Nothing needed except a roadworthy car and the entry fee.
these autosolos happen all over the place with lots of clubs. There are also "Targa" rallies which are sorta autosolos, but several miles in length. Almost a stepping stone to stage rallies without any special requirements. Extremely good fun!

Roger, a previous owner has been asking on the CT forum about your car. It is the thread which Geoff has posted above which has been revived by me after seeing this thread. As Steve and Clive have already mentioned, it might be worth joining CT if you want to take part in some driving events. CT is a member of MSA but the TDC isn't.

Hi Roger, I’m the previous owner mentioned. I’d love to see some pics of how she is now. I bought her as a non-running 1850 that was about to be scrapped by the young couple that owned it. ‘The engine is broken’ was what I was told. I, at the time, was looking for a new shell as my old 1850 had been written off in an accident with another car. I turned up to look and it was a bit untidy but relatively sound, I agreed upon a price (the princely sum of 75 gbp) and after I opened up the points gap it ran sweet as a (slightly tired) nut.

I then took it home and set about turning it into a stage car as cost-effectively as possible (I'd just graduated from uni). I have no idea what spec it’s in now, I fitted a Safety Devices cage, popped in firewall (which was the bootlid from a Rover P6!), extinguishers, leccy cut off etc, all the bits needed for it's MSA logbook, Spax adjustable (spring seat and rebound) dampers, Triumphtune ‘Forest’ spec springs, reinforced the trailing arms (as they liked to fracture between the damper and the axle where it narrows downs), and a proper Janspeed exhaust, and then I did it’s first (and only with me) stage rally with the 1850 running gear. After that event I set about finding a rotten Sprint, and used all the running gear in RVL, and did a few navigational events like that, then picked up a plate type LSD which went in and helped a lot with traction. If memory serves, the rear Spax dampers gave up the ghost very quickly, although I can’t recall what was on the rear when I sold it. I used it like that on various navigational events before parking her up as I was short on funds, eventually sadly sellling her.

EDIT: In terms of events, I'd thoroughly recommend the Chelmsford MCs Targa rallies, fantastic fun and great value for money. http://chelmsfordmc.co.uk/

Hi Roger, just seen this thread and wondered how you have got on with RVL in the intervening year? Would love to hear tales of derring-do...
