brake servo

#1 Post by cliftyhanger »

Bought a new brake servo up at stoneleigh. Told it was dolomite....
Unbolted the old one (its a tolly but seems to have had a few mods over the years, largely from a 1500) and the new one looks slightly bigger. THEN the big problem, the fixing studs are wrong, top ones longer then the old one, but right distance apart, but the top to bottom studs are too close at approx 70mm centres as opposed to the 90mm of the old one   Any ideas what its from , nubers on it are 0??573, 12(g or 0)QP76, 65, and 14?609089. It also has coarse threds for the MC mounting studs. Not happy at all, may need the car tomorrow for work, looks like the bus :x
Not funny really......I think the old servo is playing up. Very tempted to dump the servo and use a straight 5/8 master cylinder like a spitfire, my legs seem to work those OK. Would this be a problem(it is calipers at the front)

Temporarily dump the servo it's no problem at all. I replaced my servo on the 1300 with a Sprint one (after the wife complained for a couple of months!), mainly because I had it in stock. A good upgrade!

Although some MOT inspectors these days would pass it anyway assuming it was never fitted. The bulkhead pad would be a give away though...

Toledo's didn't have servos, so shouldn't be a problem :D
Refitted the original servo, did the suck thing, seemed to hold vacuum OK. But I am convinced it "rattles" whn driving. Is this a bad sign??
TBH I am more than happy to be without a servo, just needs the MC reducing in bore, I suspect the spitfire one would be fine as the front brakes are effectively the same, and the rear cylinders too. All for another day now.
Tin, is the sprint servo all OK, or unknown? Don't want to have to take it apart....

Does the rattle coincide with an inconsistent feel to the brake pedal?

Hmm, not sure about the rattle coinciding. Just notice it as I am sitting on th edual carrageway to work, and the source is from that area. Def has the sound I would associate with air moving something (hard to define in words)
I guess re-sealing may be an option, though as I saud it doesn't seem to lose vacuum when sucked....
I actually thought the rattle may be the non-return valve. How do they fit? the new servo has a new one on it 8)

Passes the suck test. I think I know the noise you mean, only does it at idle?

Most noticable at light cruise. Thought it may have been pinking, but wrong sort of noise and most definately comes from servo area.
Think a visit to up north ( :D ) is on the cards, need to compile a list of required stuff.....may be enough tokens for a jolly night out by the time its all added up

I would have expected to read that it did it at idle, it's probably no more than the filter in the valve having picked up some debris from condensation in the breather tube. Prise it out, drop the valve in a jar of hot, soapy water (soap powder, not fairy-up liquid), allow to stand overnight, rinse in warm, clean water, dry, refit, rattle gone.

The above has rid a few servos of that rattle now, including the one on my own car.

Be very careful to prise the filter out evenly by levering under both sides, the white nylon part can be quite brittle with age.
