Post subject:  Length of 1850 fan belt?

Does anyone know the length of the fan belt for my 1977 1850HL? If I knew the length I could probably find one in Halfords, rather than having to pay postage and wait for delivery.

Hi Mike, My spare is 950mm long and comes in a package labelled " 10A0950 " also labelled GCB10950 and on the belt itself is the code "AVX10 - 950 La. Someone should be able to cross-refer from that.
So 950mm seems to be good for a standard 1850 without the Kenlowe.

Yes its 950 for the 1850, original part number GCB10950 (Sprint was GCB10838 and 1500/1300 were GCB11088)

All three will be available very shortly from club spares for about £4 each plus postage...

That's good to know Alun. Maybe I'll hold off until the club have them. The car is not exactly ready for the road yet!

I am resurrecting this thread because I am struggling with the fan belt on my 1977 1850HL. I bought one from Rimmers under part number GCB10950, specified as suitable for the 1850. The belt is actually marked MSC 309 and trying to measure around its outside circumference gives me about 948 mm. But it is a fraction too short. With the alternator as low as it can possibly go (bottom mounting disconnected), it is almost impossible to force the belt over the pulleys. The engine is completely standard with original pulleys and engine driven fan.

Where can I get one that will actually fit? It only needs to be a small amount longer.

The 950 denotes the size, i dont know where the msc 309 comes from?

What I don't understand is why I can't get it on. The alternator can't go any lower as it is resting against the side of the block. Is the 950mm the outside or inside measurement? If it was 950mm on the inside, it would definitely go on and there would be some adjustment on the bracket. As it is, even if I could force the belt over the pulleys the alternator could not be raised more than a fraction of an inch. I am searching belt suppliers to try and find one a little longer.

Hi Mike, this is on ebay 960mm i'm not sure if it is external or internal, my memory wont let me.
If you just put the size you need it should come up with one.

Hi Mike, Just as a suggestion could you please try removing the long thru-bolt on the alternator, then hook the fan-belt over the alternator pulley and can you then refit the bolts O.K ? If so it may be that the O.D. of the alternator pulley is a bit on the large side and the fan belt is on the short side of normal.

Hi Mike,

V belts are often only measured by width and OUTSIDE diameter. So if the the inside teeth or V is deeper than the original...........
The listed OD for a Dolly 1850 is 950mm.
One option is to remove the alternator mounts to slip the belt on and see if there's the normal adjustment available when it's over the pulleys.
Hopefully Steve (Carledo) can offer some professional advice.

I first built the engine out of the car in the garage and fitted the belt in the way you describe, by hooking it on the pulleys and then fitting the long bolt (more about that later). But fitted like that the belt was extremely tight and the alternator was right up against the block with no possibility to move it out even a fraction.

On Monday I started to get a screeching noise from the engine which I think is the alternator bearings giving up, possibly due to the load imposed by the belt. Once I have fixed or replaced the alternator, I don't want to be in the same situation, and anyway trying to fit the very tight belt with the engine in the car is proving extremely difficult. I have ordered a 960mm x 9.5mm Gates belt from an ebay seller - thanks Tony. Hopefully that will do the trick.

As for the long bolt, when the engine was out of the car I naturally fitted the bolt from the front - its the obvious thing to do. Now the engine has the radiator in front of it, there isn't the clearance to remove the 5" long bolt! I have had to saw it in half to get it out, and I have ordered a new bolt which I shall fit from the rear.

Tights can be infinitely adjustable for this application.

The belt on my 1850 is a GFB10950 so if no nylons are to hand, perhaps worth checking on the pulley diameters? I can check dimensions for you if you would like them.

Where did you get the alternator from? It sounds as if the pulley is too large a diameter; in the core pile I have many variations of pulley wheel diameters...

... and following on from Alun's note, do you have a Sprint Torquatrol fan on your 1850 by any chance ? ( Does it even fit ?) From memory the Sprint has a different fan-belt to the 1850 and this would be one of the differences.
