I discovered why I can't get the engine to idle properly, the carb nearest the bulkhead is doing nothing, the dashpot isn't moving. I was wondering if a vacuum leak could cause this?

On the plus side I got the rev counter working by plugging the wire in, so that is good.

Happened to me recently, but for a different reason.

I had cleaned the carbs out, and put the pistons back in bone dry, resolved by taking dashpot off
and cleaning the inside with a slightly oily rag, same for piston.

Also, while doing up the three screws, make sure the piston moves, and same after tightening up,
and don't forget to top up the dashpot oil after.

what work have carried on the carbs recently?

I had something similar and it turned out the throttle valve was completely closed on the rear carb. slacken of linkage and adjust or play around etc.
