Some years ago I procured a new slant water pump. However with talk over this time of pumps with insufficient hardening on the gear leading to damaged jackshafts I was wondering if there are any identifying features of a 'bad' pump. Any markings on the shaft etc that might be a giveaway etc?

I purchased it via Ebay and have no idea where the seller bought it from. it was purchased from a club member actually but chances are they may have been unaware of such bad pumps.

If it turns out to be duff it only owes me £50 and could yet yield a usable new impellor to put onto an old shaft which can be easily rebuilt. I actually have the proper factory tool set for water pump rebuilding but if I can use my shiny new pump then great.

I think it was only (some) 12 vane pumps that were affected.

Anyhow, if the pump has the brandname "Zephyr" it is a good one.

Ian.

Ian is correct with 'Zephyr' being reliable.

I avoid those with round holes in the brass cage.

It says Zephyr on it so I'll take that as a good sign then! I'll have to check my others and compare.
