One of my favourite engines, the ECU restricted to 150bhp VW ABF MK3 Golf GTi engine:
Which I read off the graph as 133 ft lbs - over 3 percent more than the "low torque" Sprint engine gives! And all it takes is twin cams and injection.
Graham
Oops, that should be over 9 percent - got that incorrect figure of 128 ft lbs from the 127 hp at 5200 lodged in what little remains of the brain, and used that instead of the right one.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)
1970 Maroon 13/60 Herald Convertable (wife's fun car).

the lighter internals and lower inertia makes the 16v keep on delivering more when the 8v runs out of puff.
That and the larger inlet and exhaust port areas allowing better breathing at high mixture velocities - drag being proprtional to the square of air velocity- subsonic, anyway.

It would be interesting to know how the Sprint engine compares for torque with other, especially contemporary, 2L engines. However, it's worth remembering that the effect of torque, in terms of force applied to vehicle is modified by the gearing and wheel size.
