Thanks for your reply Robert. I bet you can get a Gunson's Eezibleed kit in NZ. It costs less than 20 GBP over here so is not an expensive item. I wouldn't use it as designed, which is to pressurise the master cylinder by attaching the bottle to the reservoir cap. I did this once and ended up spraying fluid all over the engine bay. Never again. At least with the reverse method, if it leaks or falls over the spill is on the floor, not on your paintwork!

The secret with the eezebleed is to use a really low pressure. Anything a bit high will cause the problem you experienced. My biggest gripe though is they tend to overfill the master cylinder which you then need to drain down to the level. I tend to use a turkey baster, not the one from the kitchen.
