Hi chaps, I'm looking at fitting an oil cooler sandwich plate with built in thermostat to the Sprint and I'm confused as to how they fit.

I understand it fastens on to where the oil filter goes, but how? I can't see that the STD oil filter goes onto it....I currently have a spin on filter adaptor on there ( they're crap etc. but I'm struggling to get paper filters and the club hasn't stocked them for months....) so, using a spin on adaptor, is the order, sandwich plate, filter adaptor, filter or is it sandwich plate then filter minus the adaptor or adaptor, sandwich plate, filter?

Can't see any decent pics so struggling a bit...for a change! 🙄

Cheers fellas! 👍

The oil cooler take off is a specific slant part. You take of the transfer plate, the part where the oil pressure switch is in, and replace that plate by one that doesn't transfer but has two outlet unions. It's not an inbetween filter part.

I believe mocal does sell them.

Gentlemen, sandwich plate not adaptor plate, or does the SP fit to the side of the engine where the pressure sender goes?

Not according to this it doesn't....

Yes Alun, I bought that, but I need a thermostat and rather than fit it so it has four pipes, make it so it has two...

Looks like that type isn't recommended for the Dolomite / TR7 / Sprint. As it fits between the filter and the block, maybe there isn't room?

They have listed the type Martin shows above, and I have fitted in my race car. Can send / post photos of the full installation if that helps.

The 'A' type there Geoff, I assume that fastens straight to the block, so then does the filter fasten to that or do you still need the filter (spin on) adaptor do you know?

I have a side adaptor plate but was trying to avoid having a separate thermostat.....

You'll have to spell out what you mean Martin.

Thinking aloud...:

Can the sandwich plate be used between the block and the transfer housing cover to achieve what you want? There are three galleries in the transfer housing and only the one in the filter housing, but there's only the one in the transfer housing cover (to link two of the three), so were it aligned correctly...?

I can only show you my setup. The transfer plate and oil filter are entirely separate and from what I can see on the Mocal website, this is the only setup they indicate is feasible. Sorry photo isn't the best but only one I have on the PC.

I know you don't want to use the separate thermostat, but as it allows constant flow in part of the pipes, it allowed me to place an oil temp gauge in the line easily.

I think you are going to have to experiment with any other setup as I've only ever seen ones like mine above

The one in your pic fits on an spin on engine so you need the adapter. You end up with an oil filter adapter adapter spin off.

Why you struggling to get paper filters? They are easy to get, a shop near you stocks them......

I am never sure which the correct ones are as I thought there was some controversy over a NRV or something so don't trust the Halfords ones.

I've binned the thought of a sandwich plate now anyway as I don't think it'll fit over the steering rack.

The controversy was (and remains) the end plates need to have a raised metal ring around the central hole. Those that have this made of a glued cardboard ring have a history of letting go of the cardboard ring that then clogs the filter.
