For that money I would expect the body work to be better that 'looks ok' and an MOT.

WHAT??????? It's a solid, tidy, drive away example for the price of a rusty, non running, Sprint project. Yes a fresh test would be nice, especially since it's not VED or MOT exempt yet, but I wouldn't dismiss it because of that! Like it or not, the days when you could buy something like this and get change from a grand, are long gone! A good starter classic, imagine how much it would be if it carried a blue oval badge!

Steve

what if it had a blue oval badge isn't a valid arguing point, just as what if it was a Lada or Maserati. you state its a solid tidy drive away example but how do you know it is. my concern with cars with no MOT and haven't been checked are if it need new sills, chassis legs, brakes etc then its not worth the money but if the owner spent £50 on an MOT then at least if it is solid it would sell a lot easier.

I think its very hard to put a value on our cars when they are just the lowly basic 1300. Members of our club seem to value them at very little including myself and I believe probably wrongly.

I own a very late 1982 registered 1300 that has won best in shows and although it now wouldn't win is very presentable and very original with a low mileage. I valued it at £3500/£4000. Members here thought I was mad, some too much nearer £2000, and others far to little, so I popped into a classic dealers and asked what he would put it up for. Now I know that's a retail price and more than a private sale would get but its a good guide and would also give a good idea for insurance valuation. He surprised me and said he would put it up in his showroom at £6000.

This led me to get a professional valuation done and they said that it would have a retail value of up to £6000 and realistically they put a valuation on it of £5500 for insurance which has been readily accepted by the insurance company.

What I am trying to say is in the eyes of those outside our circles they are seen to have more value and we are probably the ones who are holding them back. And yes I take into account the argument that they become then too expensive for us to buy, but when I look at other comparable, and less so, makes they all seem to make stronger prices. But at the end of the day any car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, but it seems a shame to me that at the end of the day a good 1300 Dolly could be worth more as a parts and donor to re shell a sprint than keeping it on the road.

If this works hopefully this is a link to a film of CWL and you can make up your own minds on whether this car is worth its valuation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA60NwI5e40

Yes I know I have used the service in the past. My ins was up for renewal and required a revaluation so knowing that posting off pics and waiting for the valuation can take a while sometimes I went down the route I did to get it done quickly. With the info sent to the insurance via a secure portal on their website it got o them in time for the renewal so avoiding that delay when agreed valuation may not be accepted should the worst happen.

Don't get me wrong it's not that I don't value the 1300 or 1500s as anyone who knows me knows I would have one over a sprint any day, in fact of the many (And I'm talking 100+) dolomite shaped cars that have passed through my hands only two have been 1850s and one a sprint.
What gets me about the advert is the 'bodywork is ok but I haven't bothered getting it checked' wording and the fact that no MOT 'could' mean the car is nothing but rust, I don't let photo's fool me into thinking what it might be like so I treat car that hasn't been checked as lower value then on that has got an MOT or been given the once over by someone who knows the cars

When I first got into Dollys it was the 1500HL that interested me, because of the Sprint dash and circular headlights. Now I have a bit more I have respect for the 1300, much more thrashable engine, but I think the existence of the high spec interior and bigger engined versions is holding down 1300 values.

The one I think could increase allot is the two door Toledo, the compact body which differentiates it from the Dolomite could make it more desirable. People like compact cars and combine that will a well known and strong engine; could be a winner.

You see allot of ads like that, sellers don't seem to understand that body work is more important than mechanicals with most classics. It isn't always easy to tell, I suspect allot of classics have rot that owners are clueless about.

The ads mention of rust in the boot would worry me, I could see that turning into a world of pain when examined closely. Underseal on the sills can hide allot of faults as well. I viewed one car that looked great in the photos and was described as good for age; that was pretty much made of filler.
