When the time comes I'm intending to start a bit of a resto thread but at the moment I'm only managing to snatch about 20 mins here and there on the car and just playing at it and trying to keep my self focused on other work, but last night I had a chance to have a little poke about again, the car is still sat on my trailer so quite easy to crawl under the front, I want to try and turn the engine over by hand before attempting to start it, I managed to get at the bottom pulley from underneath but failed to work out what size the head is on the bolt, it's not in my garage so not using my tools and just trying to find odd sockets but it's a lot bigger that modern pulleys have these days! So I get a couple of sockets that look close but then find that the radiator is too close to get a socket on even without a ratchet.....more than a little frustrating as I thought I'd get a good chance at finally seeing if it turns over :(
So what size is the head? Anyone know so I can try and get a cranked ring spanner on it, I'm hoping I have one here if not I'll buy one as I won't get a chance to get the rad out any time soon.

I also thought I'd struck lucky when I found a slim box spanner in the boot to get the spark plugs out.......only to find the the end has been split and just goes round on the plugs.......back in the day I remember having a knuckle joint tee handled spark plug socket.....I'm hoping that my father still has it his tools box, if not I know it need to be a slim fit one so what and where to get one if any help with that too?

Am I right in thinking that the spark plugs need a 16mm plug socket?

If I'm right then guess this or similar would do the job nicely.........

Correct! You also really need one with a rubber bung inside it to grip the plug and pull it out of the tube.

Thanks Steve, I meant to add a link to an ebay find but got carried away and posted, I've now added the link to my post.

Back in the day I seem to remember using a 6" piece of garden hose pipe to use to retrieve the plug and also start it off in the thread, because of the only slight resistance in the pipe to plug if the threads were not properly aligned it would just slip on the plug and not strip the thread in the head..........Porsche 911's are my other main passion and this technique works well on those too as on those engines the plugs are not held straight in a tube as the Sprints are and angled so even easier to cross thread

Come on then Steve, we've sorted the plugs, any suggestions for the bottom pulley? :lol:

Bottom pulley bolt size is one and a half inch :D

Yes 1 1/2" for bottom pulley bolt. On the plug socket 5/8" or 16mm. Get 3/8th drive the socket can get close to the tubes.

Thanks both, I'll be searching out a 1 1/2" spanner now then as well as a 16mm plug socket, there's a good chance I may even have both here already :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

We have got one of those, you can still find them on ebay.

I have found you can get the plugs out with a magnetic pick up tool, once you have undone them.

I keep an old rubber HT lead boot in my tool box; inverted it is ideal for removing the plug once lose. I also use it to put the plugs back in as it allows you to feel them home and they then just need nipping up with the socket.
