I'm currently running a rather loud and low hanging stainless steel sports exhaust on my 1500HL which I don't like and which I bought cheap as a solution to having a knackered exhaust. I'm now looking as replacing it with something a little more standard, but the only ones I can find are through Rimmer's and at £350 are quite out of my budget.

So I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that can be modified to fit - if anyone had had any experiences with this?
How different, for instance would an 1850 exhaust be?

There aren't any real cheap alternatives I can thinks of. You might be able to quieten your sports exhaust by modding it with a bigger silencer. You can get universal stainless silencers online. Some of these are clamp on, in theory you could cut your current silencer out and replace it with a longer/bigger one to reduce the noise.

Then try and adjust the exhaust mountings to make your current system hang a bit better. Maybe with some careful bending in the right place, with a bit of heat.

Otherwise it would be a case of looking out for a cheap system on ebay, I have occasionally seen them for your car but I doubt a salvaged non-stainless system would have that much life left in it.

The problem with an 1850/Sprint exhaust is the manifold is on the opposite side of the block, even if you could get it to mate to your downpipe. Plus I don't think there any cost saving.

Have you checked the manifold downpipe gasket? These go constantly on a 1500, everytime my exhaust sounded loud, the problem was there.

Use the correct nuts on the studs and make sure the downpipe is attached to the gearbox mount bracket mount, the missing bracket is usually the cause of the leak.

I have just ordered a full stainless system from Rimmers today.

My old (in perfect working order) original exhaust could be up for sale if you wanted it.

You could look into getting one made by a classic specialist. I needed a new exhaust 5 years ago and at the time a stainless was a bit to pricey for me. Was about to try a local stainless maker to get a price and a local restorer said he could make up a mild steel one for my 1300 Dolomite. He used 1500 midget boxes, one stainless and the rear mild steel because these are very readily available and fabricated up the pipe work. Cost 150.00 and still going strong so didn't think that was to bad. When it needs doing again will see if he can do stainless for the rear box and pipework.

I know this is an old thread but I have changed the manifold to exhaust gasket a couple of times and it only seems to last about 6 months. With the new manifolds still not available I tried again.
This time with the aid of a ramp i dropped the entire exhaust, removed the exhaust manifold, cleaned it up and fitted new studs. When I fitted it to the stainless exhaust ( unknown manufacture ) I found the stainless down pipe had a high spot between the 2 holes causing a slight rock. It was never going to seal correctly and not possible to spot when crawling underneath a car on axle stands. Out with the grinder and and after a bit of hard work I was left with a reasonable flat surface. Clamped the manifold solidly to the exhaust with extra lock nuts off the car. then fed it down and fitted every thing back together. Also changed the carb breather pipes which were looking ropey. 300 miles later and the 1500 is going better than it ever has in the 2 years that I have owned it.

It was a very common problem to find that the stainless steel down pipe flange was not flat but I did flag the problem up to Rimmers several years ago and they checked all their stock at the time. I hope they still check any new manufacture but I would recommend that anyone fitting a new system checks both the downpipe and the exhaust manifold before they fit the exhaust.
