If you have missed the discussion on Facebook about this, here is a link to an article by Rob Marshall:

https://www.motoringassist.com/motoring ... ered-sale/

And out of interest I placed a bid of £9999 on an eBay V5C for sale with plate, MOTs and service receipts sold as memorabilia to 'hang on a garage wall', nice to also see eBay suggesting that others then viewed Mini body shells.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273113666780

I 'won' the bidding at £725, for a V5C to hang on a garage wall. And all this after it was reported to eBay and the DVLA who both let the sale continue.

Seen one of those listed on ebay twice and reported it to ebay twice but there procedures don't allow them to enter into any conversation with you once you've reported it.

Can't remember if it was one for a Dolly but it probably was as I don't search for much else these days :D

Same when it comes to eBay, Dolomite bits is pretty much it nowadays as anything else I might as well get from Amazon and anything else it's Gumtree. I would not mind if eBay just quietly cancelled the auction and had a word with the seller but no, still live, still asking me to 'pay now'. I'm waiting for the seller to chase payment, should be an interesting discussion!

Ebay won't remove logbooks advertise as memorabilia or similar because the seller isn't legally doing anything wrong.

At the end of my experiment on this listing for a V5C and VIN (double whammy in theory) I can confirm that reporting eBay prohibited items with the report function has no effect, neither does telephoning eBay to report it even though they agree it is prohibited on the phone and say the listing will be removed. Also, reporting it to the official DVLA email address for reporting such things has no result. So, don't waste your time!

I went down every route I could find to try and get some obviously "ringed" land rovers off the road a few years ago, DVLA, VOSA, Police - nobody was the least bit interested.
I had to give up bothering or I would have gone mad with anger at the total disinterest.

Have to say that your comment 'total disinterest' sums up the reaction of officialdom as well as the fence of choice, eBay, completely.

Because I'm annoying in the face of injustice as well as selfishly not wanting my car stolen and then having a V5C from eBay applied to it, I've made a FOI request to the DVLA asking them how many reported cases that they have pursued.

Good for you! I admire your energy and commitment! I just couldn't handle the frustration myself!
When I made an FOI request to West Yorkshire police (because I spent over 45 minutes on hold waiting to get through to them on the non-emergency number) about the number of abandoned 999 and 101 calls they just fobbed me off.

It's not only classics that are being ringed! I recently took my son in laws Astra Turbo convertible for an MOT, only to be told that it already had an MOT with some 8 months left to run. This was plainly nonsense as the car had been off the road in his garden for 18 months continuously! A DVLA check turned up that the car was also taxed! After checking that all the numbers on HIS car matched the V5 (well his MIGHT have been the ringer) We reported all this to the local Police as obviously there is a clone out there, but nothing has so far happened and we have heard no more about it.

If its taxed and tested its likely also insured so should be easy to trace the person who has insured it, go to the MIB website, pay £3 and they will tell you the insurance company, write or phone them to tell them its a ringer.

I know in the past the DVLA did search eBay for these documents and mark the vehicle records accordingly.. no idea if they still do though.

A guy who lives near me has a file folder full of these "ringing kits", mostly Triumphs and most have the accompanying chassis tags! But he'd never be daft enough to sell them, let alone on ebay!
