Since I sold the Redtop, I have been finishing this charming thing.

Not really what I expected to be doing, and rather different for me, but enjoyable nonetheless, and I just love peoples faces as it powers off to the horizon :D

I am pleased with how it has all come together as I have put in a lot of time (and a few quid), but the end result justifies it. To me anyway.

Hope you like it.

My bottom jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw the pictures of your Maxi Martin, absolutely stunning! Someone going to be the lucky new owner.

A charming thing indeed.
Looks better with the chrome bumpers.

I do like Maxis. My late father owned four, one K reg, two P reg and finally a series 2 X reg (which my brother bought from him
and subsequently wrote off). They have a full 4' width across the boot floor, very handy and to say that my father exploited this
load carrying capability is to understate things enormously :D .
The X reg one was bought new. The dealer (MacRae and Dick) managed to fit the towbar in the wrong place  . My father got
a local blacksmith to modify the towbar to reposition the ballhitch in the centre of the car. MacRae and Dick paid for that.
Surprisingly M&D are no longer in business here.

When he bought the second P reg Maxi, my father had looked at a Dolomite 1500HL, but decided against buying it because there were
somewhat odd circumstances. It had belonged to a Doctor who had disappeared (believed to have committed suicide by jumping
off a cliff into the sea) and hadn't been found. The Maxi came with a full tank of petrol :? but no spare wheel. My father
complained and was given a wheel c/w a split new tyre. The salesman wasn't best pleased that on his day off work the
manager had sold the Maxi and told my father so. Not long after the salesman got convicted of fraud and sent to prison.
A few years after his release he was again convicted of the same offences whilst employed at another dealership.

Hope the sale is successful.

:eyes4u: Lovely, and I've rarely seen a Hydragas version that would sit that level. Did you by any chance retro-fit Hydrolastic or have the bottles been fitted with valves to compensate for the inevitable diaphragm porosity issue that sees most of them looking like this:
Image

That one had twice the recommended fluid pressure on, yet still sat 2" below trim at the front. Needless to say, it had no suspension travel left, they're great when they do though. Dad had eight as firm's cars between early 1969 (a very early one on a 'G' - he was careful and knew how to use the gear lever hence was the only customer who never went back into Blackshaws throughout the car's 140,000 mile life to have the gearchange cables replaced) and 1983 (worst of the lot, had three engines under warranty until eventually, its oil consumption was solved by sleeving the original block and reusing that), I've owned a couple and restored another, a very much underrated car and the earliest (1972-mid 1975) HL was a remarkably rapid thing too, I'd imagine that the extra 9bhp makes yours at least a match for one of those. Denim blue is such an attractive colour too, one of mine was mostly Denim Blue and very nice it looked too on the side with the matching doors.

Somewhere in the roof, I still have a n/o/s fishtail for the exhaust, as originally fitted on the HL along with the padded dash and the three spoke steering wheel. If the eventual buyer of this wants that bit, feel free to mention that it's no use to me and I don't want cash for it.

My mum had a 1500 - which was a hateful thing. The cars before, Morris Oxfords, Austin Cambridge's and the ones after the Maxi, Hillman Avenger, a Vauxhall Viva estate with a Triumph 2000 lump and the Scimitar were much more memorable. I say the Maxi was hateful thing as it was a bland white car (like a moderm Audi without the reliability) - all the other cars had a bit of character - two tone paint, a bit of poke or could shrug off a bit of farm yard schenanigans with amplomb. As I say, the Maxi was white goods. Like being driven in a fridge, with better visibility. I seem to remember my Grandad loved it - but he did have a Sumbeam Rapier at the time - so anything that ran was good.
Good luck with the sale, it does look a lovely thing, just not my cup of tea :D

Yet another car that was a masterpiece of space engineering.
This one looks great Martin.
These were comfortable decent cars that in my opinion put the old cart sprung Fords and Vauxhalls that were the opposition to shame.

Lovely car indeed!

My grandparents replaced their Dolomite with a red Maxi first, and then a blue one identical to yours.
They then decided to downsize and went down the Metro route. :)

I didn't realise that the right pedal in a Maxi was an accelerator as in my experience all that happened when pressing it was that the front of the car would lift slightly but the vehicle did not actually go any faster. My dad owned 3 in succession and I remember doing a lot of welding on all of them, then he bought a Proton.

Post subject:  Re: What I Have Been Tinkering With

I only ever owned one Maxi, Hobsons choice, it was the last car though an auction and I needed to get home about 30 miles. It came with 4 new tyres (remoulds) and a fresh MOT, but on getting in, the drivers seat backrest collapsed and the handbrake lever was not attached to the floor by much. The gearbox was noisy and the engine blew up 10 miles from home. So eventually I got it back, fitted a scrapyard engine and box and fixed the seat and the handbrake, went to fill it with gas for a trip to London and the tank leaked 7 or 8 gallons of gas all over the forecourt. So another tank went in it and it went in the next auction, i took a loss, but was glad to be rid of it!

This experience may have coloured my opinion of Maxis, i'd never buy another!
