Fitted Car Covers

#1 Post by Mad Mart »

Pretty soon my track Sprint will need to vacate the garage and take up it's usual space outside the garage. I want to get a decent cover for it. I'm fed up with buying these £30-£40 jobbies off Ebay or Argos. They are rubbish, don't last a year and actually don't stop the rain getting through after a while, they get brittle and tear.

I will bite the bullet and pay somewhere around the £100 mark for a cover that will last and do exactly what it says on the tin. I want a fitted cover not a sheet.

Anyone have experience of a good quality cover? :D

I had a cover on Happy for years when we lived at the Flat (no garage).

The Flat was on top of a hill, facing the sea and after a "choppy" night you could write your name on the side of the car from the salt that was blown in from the sea - scary stuff sea salt.

So I bought a cover, cost me over £100 back then, though it came with underbody straps I had to make up additional ropes to hold it in place (as it was so very windy), yes the car got sweaty under the cover, but it would dry out as it was breathable, that's the answer, get one that is breathable and the car should be kept outside otherwise you won't get the air circulation through the material and it wont be able to "wick" the moisture off of the car onto the material and away to atmosphere.

It is certainly worth paying for a really good one, one that comes with a guarantee (in that it will not come to be bits at the seams in the first wind), one with double stitched seams is to look for.

Wax the car really well though as the cover will tend to wear through the wax through it being rubbed when the wind blows.

So yes, get the best you can afford, one tailor made for the car, any generic ones tend to be too big and any excessive flapping will result in tears.

I've got a Halfords Advanced medium cover to keep the prying eyes off the donor on the drive and it's pretty good. It isn't 100% waterproof but is very breathable. They are about £70 though they are frequently on offer. Mine has worn well although it did blow off the other week and ended up hanging 20 ft up from my old tv aerial. The under body straps had all fallen off after 3 harsh winters and the regular gale force winds we get here.

I used to have a lightweight cover from coverzone and they also do a waterproof and breathable one which is good value.

Thanks guys. I've just been looking at the Monsoon and the Stormforce offerings. Both seem a similar spec and both claim to be tailored for the Dolomite, although the Monsoon is about £20 cheaper.

I've got a Stormforce cover. It's not as tailored as they make out, but it's a pretty good breathable cover. 12 months on and it's still doing a good job.

You can also have these covers alarmed, so it'll alert you if someone tries to peek underneath the cover or tries to steal it (as happened to me once). Cost is about £25 IIRC.

Thought this might be of some amusement, on the subject of car covers...
Yesterday evening it was very windy on the Island, and I was in the house watching a film when I heard a noise from outside, I got up, ran to the window only to see my car cover slowly taking off, out I ran (in my Barefeet) only to grab the cover as it was being blown down the street......unfortunatly taking me with it.
......5 minutes and a whole street's walk later after I arrived back at the house with a rather torn car cover, and two rather cold, wet and muddy feet!

Perhaps giving up walking around barefoot would have been something good to have given up for lent!

.....wouldn't have managed it though
