Last week, I sent Karlos a servo non return valve weighing a few grammes in a jiffy bag, postage (first class) was £3.30.
This week, I sent Mahesh a complete water pump and a spare impeller weighing the best part of a kilo in a suitable cardboard box, postage (first class) was £3.30! Can someone explain this to me? Please use small words and short sentences!

That's the going rate for what the Royal Mail define as a small parcel. It didn't cost me much more to return a pair of 3 way bass reflex speakers via Hermes. A shame the non-return valve wouldn't have qualified as a large letter which is a bit cheaper.

No they tried it in their "letterbox" but it wouldn't quite have it! Otherwise it would have been 90something pence, like the grommet I sent Mart a few weeks ago.

Both are classed as parcels (up to one kilogram in this case).

The expensive part of deliveries is the "final mile", i.e. the actual delivery.
Parcels are more bulky than large letters and tend to be all shapes and sizes as well,
which makes for more potential awkwardness for the postman making the deliveries so less productivity
which leads the Royal Mail to impose the higher delivery charges you encountered....

My son sold something on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I went to the Post Office for him and it was going to cost £13 to post it second class. The previous week he had sent something a little smaller for £2.80. So, I took the parcel home, cut the box in two, split the contents between the two boxes and taped on some cardboard to make it into two parcels at £2.80 each. A saving of over £7 to post the same stuff!

I don't even bother with the Royal Mail, I cannot be arsed to stand in a huge queue at the post office located with two young children whilst one window is open and the rest of the staff are having a chat in the background then to be ripped off because I'm sending a matchbox.

So I now just use Parcel2Go! Sent a new BBQ from here to Brasov in Romania via UPS for £50.

Oh and I had a 'long pub lunch' once, popped into the post office on my way home, when the woman demanded to know what I was sending I told her it was a *** toy!

I always use Parcel2Go, so easy, book online the night before (you can choose the service you want), they come & pick up the parcel, no hassle or queues!

Anything under 2 kilo send via post office, it will be slower and first and second class count for nothing as they can both take several days.
Over 2 kilo we use Parcel Hero who are mostly next day and have never failed us.
Parcel Hero use UPS by the way.

Say what you will about RM, at least they generally have somewhere local you can collect your parcel from - unlike some of the couriers who want me to drive 30-40 minutes away to an office that's only open during office hours (when, funnily enough, I'm in the office, which is why I wasn't in for the delivery in the first place) or for, if you're lucky, an hour on Saturday morning - and I live in a large town in the South East, so I hate to think what it much be like for people in properly rural areas...

UPS used to be the worst, but they've recently started using a drop at our local corner shop, which is a huge improvement.
