How do you smooth out light surface rust?

I have always felt that filler is an overkill, and never had much success with knifing putty.

Recently I bought a Halfords touch up kit for my wife's fiesta and part of the instructions said 'use the filler primer'. It really was a great success however they don't sell it separately. The filler primers that I have used (UPOL etc) are only really any good for very light scratching if that.

I have a spot blaster so it would be very nice to just treat a small area ( say 1" round) and then smooth it and airbrush/paint it out without using filler and murdering the surrounding area.

Try a carefully brushed coat of David's Zinc 182 Primer... Its very thick and high build so it fills pits well, its also excellent at holding back rust.

strongly suggest etch primer on the rust area first.
