It goes in today to have the front springs replaced. The strut top bearings are being replaced at the same time with genuine parts from a local dealer (Perry's in Hudderfield) which were cheaper than Euro Car Parts so it was a no-brainer really.

The job took longer than expected and still wasn't finished when I went round to the garage. This was because the bonnet had to come off so the front scuttle could be removed. The wiper motors (there's one for each wiper arm) had to be removed to get access to the strut top. It was a good thing that I'd decided to replace the strut top bearings because one was seriously past it and the other one wasn't too far behind. The bearings are being replaced with genuine Citroen parts so there won't be any problems with them in the future. When I left the garage one of the struts had been put back on so he's on the home straight.

The strut bearings are short lived I'm afraid Dave.
It could be the third set your car has had given its age?
The springs don't have long lives either.

The strut tops corrode (badly) as well, but these parts are common to a few cars so are available at quite reasonable prices, should the need arise.
I would be applying Bilt Hamber wax if I had the car….

On a slightly more positive note, when the springs break the car can still be driven (since the spring won't have pierced the tyre).
On other closely related models you are not so lucky.

I'm hoping that by using decent quality parts that it isn't going to fail anytime soon. I saw plenty of copper grease being used which should help things. The job is done and it has improved things. I don't think there anything else that needs doing. The V5C came in the post this week so I can get a rear number plate for the caravan.

There's just one more thing...

There's a clicking sound when the steering is turned. It only happens on part lock and I suspect that the offside outer CV joint is the culprit. The same CV joint has failed previous MoTs so I reckon a cheap part has been fitted to get it through. When I bought the car the seller offered to replace both sides for the cost of parts. I don't want to take them up on that offer because they will fit the cheapest parts and I will be in the same situation again before too long. Citroën only supply complete driveshafts for the thick end of £200 exchange so my best option is to have a decent quality part fitted. I can live with it for now and leave it until next month when my bank balance has recovered.

They will just throw the cheapest parts on (they told me it would be £40 per side which says it all). I'd rather pay for it all myself and know that the job is done once and done right. I've learnt this the hard way. The nearside one seems to be fine because I've checked that side when I was investigating my starter problem. The MoT history has pervious failures due to the offside outer CV joint so that's the best place to start.

In my experience Dave, a knackered outer CV joint makes its most and worst noise on full lock.
I wonder if the noise you are hearing is actually a drop link, Dave?

Said drop links are a pretty rubbish design really. I have found that they don't take kindly to being reused,
so now if they are removed from my friend's Picasso, new ones go on. Delphi ones are about £35/pair.

With the car jacked up, on axle stands and with the wheels removed
get an assistant to turn the steering lock to lock. You will see/feel movement in the joints if there is any.



Regarding the CV joints, if you suffer a split boot, be wary of replacements….they do not last for long (and are grossly expensive!).
You can split the outer joint from a driveshaft for replacement, but if you intend to keep the car,
should the need arise, I suggest giving serious consideration to new driveshafts.

Recon exchange shafts from my local factors are around £90 each. Used them several times on Pugs and they've been fine.

I'd ordered some LED sidelight bulbs on eBay (a locally based UK seller who I've used before) and they were ready to collect from my local Argos. I took a photo after I'd fitted the first one to show the difference between the filament and LED bulb.

The C4 Grand Picasso like most modern cars has CANbus so I had to get suitable bulbs to avoid any error messages.

Which bulb is which? drivers side is warmer and looks better to me, passenger side is more blueish and harsh, doesn't look as effective?
