I've just ordered a pair of front dampers. This should be an easy job because the front suspension has all been apart recently when I had the new springs fitted. I should've replaced the dampers back then but I didn't know that they were past their prime. This should hopefully eliminate that annoying noise that I sometimes get when I'm steering. I know it is NOT the outer CV joints because I've turned the front wheels by hand with the steering turned and the front of the car off the ground and there's no noise coming from them.

It'll be the topmounts creaking if the noise happens whilst turning the steering. It's a known weakness on Picassos.

Steve, I had the mounts & bearings replaced when I had the springs replaced. The old ones were well past it and genuine ones were only £13 for the pair from a local dealer.

I'm glad you are okay Dave.

I would someone to listen to your cv joints to determine if they are making the noise or not. Cv joint make noise under load. When turning a wheel by hand there's not really a load on it. The noise of a starting to fail cv also differs turning left or right. In very beginning it can just make noise turning one side ending in making noise driving straight out without turning.

There's also the non-working aircon but it just needs a new condenser. It gets a good run on the commute to Leeds every (working) day which suits the diesel engine. It has been used for towing the caravan, taking stuff to the tip and I picked up a load of materials for next door's decking from the local B&Q and it didn't miss a beat.

The dampers were delivered a couple of days ago so I decided to start fitting them. Getting to the strut tops involves removing the bonnet, wiper arms, scuttle panel, wiper motor cover and finally the wiper motors (yes, there's 2 of them - one for each wiper arm). Once that little lot is out of the way the damper/spring assembly is relatively easy to remove. Removing the spring and strut top mount was a pig of a job necessitating the use of an angle grinder to get the nut off. I could afford to sacrifice this part as the new dampers came with nuts. It took me several attempts to get everything on the new damper aligned correctly but I got there in the end. By the time I'd finished fitting the offside damper it was 2am so I packed up my tools, cleaned up and went to bed. Has it cured the clicking sound? It isn't as bad but the clicking sound is still there but I've yet to fit the nearside damper so I'll have to reserve judgement until then. I'm going to wait until the weekend to do that job. I'm not working until all hours to get it done because I need the car to get to work.

Sounds like the car was made not to be ever be repaired. I know the packaging is tight but having to take the bonnet off is ridiculous. I now know why French cars have such a bad reputation for expensive repairs as you've got to take most of it apart before getting to work! They're probably best bought new then keep for 3 years then flog em once out of warranty. The prospect of owing a middle aged Frenchie truly horrifies me.

Audrey Tatou is not middle aged!

The prospect of driving a car with one new front shock absorber and one knackered shock absorber horrifies me more!

I'm just wondering what more is going to be replaced before new driveshafts are ordered.

Alun, I'm going to fit the other damper at the weekend. I'm not going to be working on the car through to the small hours during the week again when I need it to get to work the following day. A few days won't make any difference. To be honest, I should've left it until I could've fitted both dampers at the same time.
