Alloy.

An alloy is a combination of metals, mixed to alter the properties of the original elements being combined. It can be done to change hardness, ductility or reduce corrosion.
Brass is an alloy.
Stainless steel is an alloy.
Aluminium is not an alloy.

Too many people say alloy, in reference to a component that has some aluminium content.

People who refer to uprated suspension as 'coilovers', this despite the fact that the vast majority of cars come out of the factory with coil over dampers at least on the front if not the back as well.

It is usually the "ARY" brigade that go on about "coilovers", You then see them wrapped around a tree somewhere :( with the police having to tell their families.

Another one.....

being asked for a photo of an item when I have replied to a wanted advert,

in fact, to be fair, this doesn't bother me anymore because I don't send photos now,
a direct result of never getting even a polite acknowledgement!

Have I just alienated a fair number of forum users.......?

Ian.

advertising on sports' shirts (or any clothing).

Fair play to both Heart of Midlothian FC and Barcelona FC for declining to accept such and instead
giving their space to charity.

Close ratio.

What they really have is a short throw gear lever. Nothing to do with the gears in the box.

So where do you stand on alloy wheels? (I won't say alloy rims to avoid offending 2 at once!) Most alloy rims are indeed mainly aluminium (NOT aluminum as my stupid spellchecker insists) but contain other materials as well so, by definition ARE alloy!

I have so MANY pet hates, including several already mentioned here, but if I had to pick a favourite hobbyhorse it would be text speak spelling, especially when not used in an SMS context!

Yeah, I hate text speak. Should we ban it on this forum? It is banned on the C4 forum. Ian, I see poor English at work and I work in a solicitor's office! It think Karl might've contradicted himself. If something has aluminium content that implies that there is more than one metal involved and must therefore be an alloy.
