I don't know about the rest of the country, but it is the amount of salt on the roads just now that is putting me off using my cars. The gritting lorries have been out every day since the beginning of November. I think the roads department is trying to show that gritting is an essential service, so should not be cut!

As soon as they start gritting thats it, covered up in the garage on a charger, and just when you get a crisp day they are out the night before gritting again, had some nice days but the roads stay damp with the salt on the floor

My friendly local independent garage man reckons the amount of salt used on the roads in Ayrshire is ridiculous. He says that while the bodyshells of modern cars are now mostly well protected, the subframes and suspension components are not, and he is seeing failures of these items due to corrosion. In Japan and Scandinavia they have pretty hard winters but I don't think they use salt at all, just grit. Or am I wrong?

Round here they grit every night it seems but then when it actually needs doing they 'forget'.

I try to go out only when it's dry at this time of year but even then you still find wet bits. I usually then rinse off when I get back and spray on some Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac which neutralises any remaining salt and provides a nice corrosion resistant barrier.
