Well this was what was bothering me as the one car I owned that I should never have sold was the TR5 that I owned in 1980 and did sell for £3000 and if you multiply that figure by over ten is what they fetch now :(
I was passing a local car dealer who sells all sorts of cars and I have known his family since the sixties, on his forecourt was a BMW Z4 2.2 with electric roof and lovely little six pot motor and heated leather seats plus glass rear window also heated. The cost was £2750 and he would take my old tired BMW 318 touring as £1000 making the difference £1750 to pay. The Z is now mine if I can pry it off the wife! It goes well and is exactly what that good old TR of mine would have become if the management of BL could be occupied elsewhere instead of ruining so many marques. Of course BMW own the Triumph name and have occasionally been accused of starting a "Mini" type rebirth of the TR line. Well there is no need as this little Z is a TR in all but name me thinks. I love it!

Young woman opposite sold her Fiat 500 and paid a similar price for exactly the same car some 12 months ago, and I often compare it to my old TR6 that I shouldn’t have sold, whilst remarking how unbelievably cheap it had been. High mileage early example, but spotless!

What to buy when you cannot afford to buy a 6 pot TR?

How about an 8 pot TR?

I agree with Trackerjack. I have a 2.2 litre Z3. Cheap as chips and what a lovely engine! You really have to watch the rev counter as it spins up so freely. The only downsides are the plastic rear window (Z4 got rid of that) and the somewhat hard ride on low profile tyres.

Z4 is a cracking motor, absolutely the spiritual descendant of the tr6 and it's ilk.

Sadly you have to pay a lot for a Genuine 8 pot TR as some of the replica's are not very good and I just am too old to be chasing the rust any more. However I have looked at buying a decent TR7 and converting it's powerplant to a 16v one.

Back to the Z4, the rear window is heated glass as I also did not want to return to the days of trying to see out of a frozen car in winter as the car has to get me to work (even if I do only work 2 days a week now I am of retirement age)

Oddly enough, I have been recommissioning a long stored early TR7 Coupe over the last few weeks, a one owner, unwelded, 28k, 4 speed car and was sufficiently impressed to turn my own attention to ebay for a suitable project. Like you I think the V8 convo has been done to death (though the local to me firm of Grinnell did a fair job of it) and was also thinking in terms of something with 16 valves. Though in my case the 16 valves would be in a Vauxhall C20LET, otherwise known as a Redtop Turbo! With a relatively simple tune 230-250 bhp is a reasonable target and with a strict diet on the body and some suspension and brake improvements would make a fairly impressive road/track weapon. Though I have some doubts about finding one as nice as the one i'm currently working on!

I meant to mention when I saw you on Wednesday, there is an LT77 gearbox in Jonners’s garage...no 5 speed axle though!

I have a 2.0 5 speed axle lying around in the yard! Bought for the Carledo in 2009, before I got hold of the Sprint axle it runs on to this day. But I think the guy's plan is to drive it as a 4 speed over the summer this year then convert to an O/D box (Sprint or 1850) if he decides he likes it enough.

Further to my suggestion of an 8 cylinder TR, I came across just such a beast whilst browsing ebay today, but not a TR8 or converted TR7, something MUCH more left field! A TR6 with a Stag V8 fitted! Now I can't quite understand WHY anyone would WANT to do this, but it looked really well executed and pretty good value at a few quid shy of 15 grand. And certainly one of a kind!
