Gushing Water Pump Waterfall of Doom

Postby Lord Tolly on Sun Jul 25, 2010 11:24 am

Just been for a drive in the Tolly TR7 and I now have a gushing waterfall down the side on the engine block so I now think the water pump has died a death.

What I need to know is has anyone got any recomendations of places to get a replacement from as I dont have the know how and tools to rebuild it myself and what extra parts I will need when replacing it.

Cheers

Glenn

Glenn, are you certain that the leak is from the slot in the block? It's not altogether impossible of course, but the leak could be coming from the bypass tube under the thermostat? In that case, the coolant would run down past the slot so it's easy to conclude that it is from there.

*Crosses fingers for you.*

Awww, rats! Never mind, you're in the right place, Jonners started a "how to" thread about water pumps (will edit later to add thread url here, but right now I'm accessing the board via phone which makes searching a tad footery) some time ago which explains it in straightforward terms with comprehensive detail, the parts? Well I'd go to James Paddock simply because they're not rimmers like Rimmers.

has anyone had any experiance of a company called Robsport TR7 Specialists.

They are quite close to me and are not badly priced on their parts.

Few people I know have used Robsport and been pretty pleased with the service.
Think a few people on here get stuff from them too.

Glenn, I've had lots of stuff from Robsport, mostly through their "Numpty9" eBay shop, propshaft centre mount, Unipart oil filters, some body parts that I probably won't need, but wouldn't find anywhere else now and random other bits & pieces. All delivered pronto and well packed.

sounds good to me John, it would probably be easier for me to trundle down there myself for the stuff as its not too far from me and at the same time get advice from them on what else I would need . :D

To attempt to answer your question......

You need to remove the inlet manifold to access the water pump.
The pump itself may or may not come out of the engine block easily.........

Apart from the (reconditioned) pump you will need
a set of water pump cover gaskets
inlet manifold gaskets (before fitting make sure these are a proper fit)
inlet manifold O ring (if a TR7 has one fitted?)
water pump bypass pipe or O rings for said pipe (depends on which type is currently fitted).

There are three types of pump impellor (two 6 vane and one 12 vane), so please make sure any replacement is the same
(otherwise you will need to change the pump cover to match).
