I bought this off ebay for just under £5 BIN (Incl P+P). Thought I'd post some pics in case anyone else wants one

Image
The black cover on the left is obviously the standard cover and is there to give a size comparison

Image
Just resting in position to show size.

It takes normal blade fuses.

The cover has a rubber sealing insert to it and seam a little flimsy but only if you're heavy handed.

Item was:-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1

The circuits are probably goi to be:-

1, Permanent Live (No Lights)
2, Ignition Live (No Overdrive)
3, Overdrive
4, Dip lights
5, Main Beam
6, Stereo

I will fit it when I can #-o

Probably need to relocate the Voltage Stabiliser but hey ho, nice easy to get to modern fuses. Easy to remove, check if blown or are OK etc.

I looked at buying one similar to this but couldn't see how it was going to work.

You only have two live wires coming in from the left, one permanent live and one off the ignition. How do you get all the wires on the right to get power from the left, if you see what I mean. :?

Ahh, yes...Good point!

I will be using yellow crimps where needed as you can get two wires into the crimp part so you have an in and an out.

Not looked into the what, when and how yet as the whole subframe/engine/box came out today but it should be plenty simple when the time comes.

I have one just like that. Haven't fitted it yet, I'm going to locate it inside the car.

Cheers
Mark

Colin,

A bit of sidetracking but what is that part lying in the wing gutter between the jubilee clip and the clear pipe? I have one of those in a box of bits and have never found where it should live. :-k

There are 6 wires on the right side of the box, anybody care to confirm or correct the following? Or add the ratings?

Purple 1:
- Hazard lights
- Cigarette lighter
- Clock
- Boot light
- Courtesy light

Purple 2:
- Horns
- Passing headlight flash

Green1:
- Reversing lights
- Overdrive

Green 2:
- Windscreen wiper park function

Green 3:
- Windscreen wiper
- Windscreen washer
- Heated rear window
- Brake lights
- Blower
- Seatbelt warning
- Tachometer

Green 4:
- Voltage stabiliser which then does:
- Fuel gauge
- Temp gauge

So you could fuse the above groups by just moving wires at the fusebox. Then there is:

Unfused, supplied by a white wire on the left of the fusebox:
- Choke warning
- Handbrake warning
- Fuel warning
- Oil warning
- Brake balance warning
- Voltage gauge
- Ignition circuit

Which could be fused. Other white wire on the left is the feed from the ignition switch. Lastly there is:

Unfused, supplied from the splitter on the positive battery lead:
- All interior illumination
- All headlights
- All side lights
- Number plate illumination

None of my manuals show how fog lights are fed. If you want to break up these groups you need to find the splits in the loom or knit a new one. Draw lots of pictures with dimensions of the runs if you do please.

Isn't that the bit that holds the throttle cable end?

Yes Mart. Absolutely spot on!

I really must keep track of these little odds and sods ready for reassembly!!

Actually lots of little plastic bags store the small stuff, this must just be the one that got away

Now that little lot just saved me a good few hours checking it for myself 8)
Basically I will be spliting the loads out. I hadn't realised there was unfused circuits in the car  I thought all were fused but either 'permanent' or 'ignition' live.
That will all change then

Tin, I will let you know how it all goes back together, no sweat.

Wont be for a good while yet though

I know this is probably the worst reason to get one of these, but:

In my 1850, there are some speakers in the back (which kinda suck so i'll replace sometime) but when I flash my headlights the music cuts out as a flash then comes back on.. it's really annoying. Would re-wiring everything fix this ?

Phil

Rewiring everything seems a little extreme. Does just the sound go or does the stereo switch off? If it's the latter you've probably got a combination of tired battery / alternator and uprated headlights. When you flash the lights all six filaments are lit, if your electrics are less than 100% this will drop the voltage and a modern stereo will sulk. Stick a multimeter on the purple wires at the fusebox and flash the lights.

I think the above is the case as the sterio only blips..

It's a voltmeter, ammeter and ohmeter all built into one meter. Very handy for diagnosing electrical gremlins.

Voltmeter:- can lend you one Phil. They are only about £15-£20 for a simple half decent one anyway. Try Maplin if there is one near you

Are you on the road yet? If so, come over one day and we'll fix it 8)

If your going to get a multimeter get one with a dwell meter on it, makes setting your points a dream, or am I the only one with points still in use
