Hiya!
Just wondering if anyone can tell the 'going price' for a working engine - maybe a recon. I'd appreciate a guide price for a short engine, as well as a running one with everything on it.
Thanks :)

It largely depends on the components used. Use cheap components and find a cheap machinist then you'd be looking at anything from a few hundred up. However you might want to take a punt on a used engine which could be £50 up on Ebay, however it'd be foolish to stick that straight into a car without giving it the once over. You pays your money and takes the choice.

I assume you have a faulty engine?

Thanks for that. Mine's not faulty as such but it's done a lot of miles - it went round the clock back in 1991 and I can't see anything that suggests it's a replacement. That, combined with a lack of any history with the car (except the old MOTs) makes me want to whip the engine out and give it a good going over. I'd like to take my time over it and so fancied popping in one that had been reconditioned, or at least known to be running well, in the meantime to keep on motoring. :)

My original sprint has 248,000 miles on its original engine.

My track car had £4,500 thrown at its engine and I managed to use it three times before a £5 component failed necessitating a further rebuild.

These are the two extremes. I'd suggest you test your 100k engine and find out how bad a shape its really in and if it ain't broke then why consider 'fixing' it?

It's coming out of the car anyway so I thought I might as well do some work on it. Good to know that yours did 200k+ - mines not there yet, haven't got the old MOTs to hand, and the speedo was replaced, but IIRC I'm on about 160k - it's just warming up :)

A compression test and oil pressure test are good indications of whether you need to strip the motor down - if you've got good compression and oil pressure it's probably not worth a strip down.

I'd strip it down regardless, just for the fun of it. :D

You dont have to put a Sprint lump in it.
A TR7 one will fit....and go well enough while you sort yours and be a lot chepaer to boot.

A compression test only shows that there are pistons and valves in the engine. A leaktest does show the condition.

So it will probably stay in
And it isn't that difficult to get a few extra horses out of it without ruining it's drive-ability and fuel consumption.
