Hi guys

I know im new but this is a fairly important topic.

Not more than a year ago you could insure yourself on footman james as a 17 year old, i decided to go with a normal insurance company for a year on my mini to work up no claims, when i went to renew, the underwriters had changed their mind and you genuinely have to be over 25 now.

Ive just had a prang in my current 'temporary' car, (a 1990 panda) which was supposed to be my runabout until i fix my dolly up, and the insurance company have told me im to be held liable which means my insurance quote (just using comparison sites as general guide) has gone from £1500 to £1900 and with two years NCB it would have gone down to £1300

The panda is only £750 a year fully comp but it is a hateful disgusting shitebox that someone has lowered with an angle grinder and i wouldnt wish anyone the pain of owning, driving, or changing gear in it.

Therefore, i want to drive this dolomite as soon as i can, because i wont last till next november in the panda.

What im getting at is, since this change in underwriters, has anyone managed to find an insurance company offering decent prices.

I physically cant afford £1900 so if i cant get it down i might have to wait.

Thanks for your time!

Jono

1977 1850 HL, 19 with theoretically 0 years no claims now.

Ive tried all sorts of different cars with hypothetical insurance quotes, anythings from acclaims to 1300 dollys to allegro's and theyre all either the same, more or not less enough to be worth it, so it either has to be the panda for the rest of the year or lots of money for the triumph.

Currently if under 25 classic insurance is a no-go on anything above 1500cc.
When I passed a year and a half ago I insured my 1850 for £1000 unlimited mileage but now things have changed, for the worse. :( In my experience the best you can get is with insure2drive direct on anything old, add 2 older drivers, keep the mileage as low as possible and cross your fingers for an adequate quote.
Also just saw on the news that guy's insurance is to drop up to 8% and females to rise up to 38%.

Insure2drive is who i used with the mini, so could be a shout.

Do you know when its going to drop?

Well, I'm 20 and am paying £880 (£1100 if I paid monthly) for my 1300, but that's is as a garaged, 2nd car that only does 4000 miles a year. That's with Flux Direct, I never managed to find another sub-£1000 quote.

The days of young people getting cheap insurance on classics seems to be well and truly gone...

I'm 18 (17 when I took the policy out) on a 1500HL with "insured2drive" and it is costing me £1700 with an annual millage of 10,000. Not great but far below average for people of my age. I also got a quote for an 1850 from them for about £1800. They'd probably be a bit cheaper for you as you're a bit older.

24, modified 1850HL, no no claims, 10000 miles a year commuting to work, £285. Lancaster. Win. Flux also matched their quote. This is all down to club membership though.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

With that claim it's going to cost you a bomb no matter who covers you.

The few classic specialists that would cover me at all would only do so if I had club membership. Insure2drive tends to give out decent quotes on classics, I think the RAC gave a decent one too, I say decent, I mean under £1600.
Also, have you checked the renewal price for the Panda? I reckon that'll have shot up by a fair chunk too...

Still, £1900 isn't that bad for a 19 year old with 0 no-claims on a car with such a big engine, not in insurance terms anyway!

I agree its not too bad, just more than i can afford, and my parents cant front me either because my dads business has just folded.

I dont have 0 years no claims yet, ive not been claimed against yet, might go outside of insurance, depends what the repair quote is on this girls car.

With two years no claims the insurance would have been 1300, so im hoping its a decent one.

Thanks for all help so far, im just going to have to wait and work on the car in the mean time until this persons moany mother gets back to me.

I hate to say it but I'm going to anyway....

Could you not look into getting a Dolly 1500HL (same trim as 1850) instead or even a 1300?
You might be able to Part ex or even swap your 1850 for one in similar condition.

Not the best answer, I know, but at least you could go on motoring in a Dolomite?
I always wanted an 1850, but have started out with my 1500HL for insurance reasons.

Regards,

Tim
