I've now fitted the sill strip on the nearside. Among the job lot of parts were some trim clips which I knew would come in useful.

There's just the bit of trim on the wing and I'll have a full compliment of chrome trim on the nearside. I also fitted the spare wheel on the front nearside because the tyre was flat (faulty valve). Not much but progress is progress.

That's the least of my worries. I've gotta get the engine running again.

I connected the battery -ve lead and there was nothing from the starter. After some fiddling with the inhibitor bypass the starter came back to life. It took quite a bit of cranking before it started to fire by which time the battery was running down so I've taken it out and I've put it on charge. If I can't get it to run after this I'm putting the rubber mounts back on. It was running fine before I fitted the solid mounts.

Probably took ages because you needed to fill the carb float chambers after a long lay up.

I always pull the plugs to save the starter then crank the engine over to fill the float bowls after a long lay up, I'll be doing this on RUK.

Or you can just disconnect the inlet at the pump and fill it through the hose! :wink:

That would have the same effect when sanding all the paint off and paint it brown again because it did run when it was brown. As you always say yourself, start at the beginning. Fuel? Spark? Timing? If all ok it should run.

I'm back to where I was before. I've checked the ignition timing and set it from scratch. I turned the engine and lined up the timing marks and checked the position of the rotor arm was in line with the mark I'd made on the dizzy body which is in line with the No. 1 lead on the cap. I have a small 7/16" combination spanner in the glovebox which is handy for the dizzy bolts. Once I was satisfied that the timing was fine I was about to start on the carbs but I got interrupted. Among the stuff I'd kept from the parts haul from Steve W. were a set of spark testers that flash whenever the HT leads are firing so they'll come in useful. The engine is on the verge of running so I'm not far off...

I wouldn't touch the timing or carbs if it was running fine before the lay-up. It is probably just a bit of oxidation on the points, or a bit of dirt on the plugs. I am sure a good charge of the battery should have it going.

A bit late for that. I've already been messing about with all the settings so I'll have to start from scratch. I keep on getting sidetracked so I don't seem to make any progress at the moment.

I reinstated the rubber carb mounts and it hasn't made much difference. I'm seriously considering either fitting points and a condenser to the Sprint dizzy or reinstating the original Delco dizzy. I have plenty of sets of Delco points from the parts haul so I can swap out the points. Unfortunately, I don't think that I have a Lucas condenser. I'm so close to getting the engine running and I'm edging ever closer each time.

Why did you change to the Sprint dizzy? The delco one's fine.

I found it pretty easy to change the points and set the gap, I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I probably found it easier than on a Sprint.

Agree 100 % . The Delco dizzy is a masterpiece of high voltage engineering. Cap + rotor arm is really well designed. Combine that with a Lumenition optronic electronic ign and a 12V coil and you won't have many problems.

The points on the Sprint dizzy are easier to get to. In an 1850 I have to use a 45D4 cap & rotor arm with the 1850 HT leads.

I'd agree with Tony. You can do the points easilly enough if you take the weights off. Condensor is the issue, but you can get round that with a maplin kit.

Your failure point will then be only points cam wear...

The Sprint dizzy advance curve is not right for an 1850 - doesnt advance enough.

If I can find a Lucas 45D4 condenser I can leave the 44D4 dizzy in. When I first fitted the 44D4 I git the engine running on point before I fitted the Britpart kit. I ended up donating the points and condenser to a Dolly 1300 owner at a recent TDCIR (I think it was the 2014 one which was in Cheshire). I'm aware of the differing advance curves and this doesn't bother me in the slightest. I do have the option of reinstating the Delco.
