I used a 6mm spacer and it gave the same level as the original (which wasnt ruined by any means)

Approx 2,500miles since fitting the Volvo gearbox mount and all is still well. TR7V8 with approx 200bhp. This also included multiple runs on the dragstrip at Triumfest this year

You'll be honoured to learn I found two of these new boxed Volvo mounts in Jonners' loft at the weekend.

Thank you for saying Alun, and I am indeed very much honoured.

Hi chaps,
I'm just in the process of this mod. I just want to check the shims go on the gearbox side of the mount? I only ask as the mounts are 45 degrees 'out' to each other on the mounting face to the gearbox. I'll try and take a picture but the camera on my phone is playing up.

Cheers

Alex

The mount designs are different, but work the same, haven't had to do anything with mine since I wrote that guide. Shims go on the flat top, you're picture has them upside down, between the gearbox and mount, to take up the difference in mount height. Go back to the first page and make sure your mount looks like it does in the last photo in my post, shims sit on that central square block.

Hope that helps!

Ah yes, got it now. I was having a total brain block! I think I'd used all my energy wrestling the exhaust rubbers off - I really hate that design!

Did you bother fitting the plate that goes on the underside of the mount or just use a washer and nut?

Those exhaust hangers are the spawn of satan!* I didn't bother with the bell plate thing, just nyloc nut and a washer.

Edit: *More so if you've got round hangers on the exhaust itself then forget it in my opinion, not only that but they barely last a year before perishing. I've gone for round rubbers, there are other good alternatives too, have a search here!

Brilliant. Thanks for the info.

I find a lot of swearing and a liberal dosing of washing up liquid makes it a lot easier to slide them about

After a few delays from other calls on my time, I've finally finished this mod and road tested.
All I can say is if you've not done this mod - DO IT! :D
The difference in the driving is night and day, drive line shunt has all but disappeared, vibration gone. I can actually talk whilst at motorway speed rather than shout.
My original mount didn't look bad but the results speak for themselves. To top it off it's cheap too!
Thanks for putting in the effort and sharing Galileo.

I did this mount retrofit on my Sprint and put a few pictures of how I did it in my thread if anyone wonders what this job entails. Even though I haven't driven it yet, all the knocking that was there and at idle appears to have gone. The knocking was so bad, it sounded like the bottom end was on its way out!

A mate who loves his old Volvo's told me that this mount has been used by most model of Volvo for a very long time. Hopefully this means it is unlikely to go out of production anytime soon. Providing Febi still keep making it, hopefully the quality of the rubber will still stay correct and decent. They're a bit enough outfit that makes a lot of rubbery parts that hopefully they should properly know what they are doing!

The date code on mine was 2019, so definitely still in production at the moment.

I have often wondered how many people have had a gearbox reconditioned or bought another on the back of installing that appalling repro mount, or even think that it is normal that their cars sound the way that they do.

I'm really pleased it has worked as well for you as it did for me.
