At the bottom of the steering column shaft is a washer. This will stop the bush from sliding up the shaft (and into the car).
The original bushes break up over time.

There should not be any movement of the subframe. Worn bushes or (in more drastic cases) failed cup washers will allow this.
Any likely movement is of the steering rack relative to the subframe (and therefore the car). The OE s/rack bushes have a short lifespan. This
is detrimental to the lower steering coupling.
Correct, but think about it. If theres any excessive movement of the rack / column / subframe then the washer will move with it - and won't prevent the bush being pushed upwards.

The Superflex bush can be fitted either way round.Ian.
It can - but only one way is correct! Large end in engine bay.
Matt.

This is an interesting topic. My steering column bush popped out so Matt's suggestion would've avoided this but (there's always a "but") as Jonners has already said, there must be other issues if the UJ is close enough to be able to push out the bush. On my 1850, I've been having those very issues because of the offside subframe mounts.

Well i disagree - the bush large end should be fitted inside the car - even the overhaul manual show the bush is fitted from the inside of the car.

and please review the previous page for a pictoral views of the steering bush.

Every lower steering column bush I come across has the larger mushroom part on the inside of the car up against the washer welded on the bottom of the column. In the engine bay in between the steering knuckle and the lower steering column is a flat washer .This must act as thrust washer so when the steering is in motion it stops the knuckle ragging the bush.

Last night while on nightshift here at the fire station we got a call from the police looking for a firefighter who is into classic cars. Turns out some ned high on drugs decided to kick in the door of my lockup. Luckily several of the nearby residents saw and reported it, so when the police quickly arrived ( thanks guys  ) the idiot was found with the garage door on top of him and he was duly dragged from below by his ankles and slung in the back of a waiting police car. Now banged up over the holiday weekend till his court appearance next Tuesday morning.
I am glad now that I had decided to extend my rental of the workshop in Bishopton otherwise my Sprint would have been inside and no doubt badly damaged!
It did, however land on several doors and other panels before landing on the junkie within.

I will attempt to contact the neighbours who saw it and report it and also gave my details to the police in order to thank them. They all know that I am restoring my car and always ask about its progress so its nice to know that while I am not always at my lockup they are looking out for me. They may not fully understand why we classic car fans do what we do but its good knowing that they still support us in our endeavours!

In court today and the lawyer bleated on about how his client was making progress with his drug addiction (yeah, right) and has no recollection of the events and is trying to turn his life around. It was all I could do not to shout out in disgust! Seriously though, does anybody really believe the sherrif agrees with this crap???

Deferred for background reports from social work til 29th July where he will no doubt get a payback order and my lockup is no more safer or secure than before. Grrrrr!

Buy a heavier garage door - see if it can do a bit more damage to him next time...

I often wonder how the defence lawyer would feel if it had been his property that had been damaged/nicked etc.

Absolutely, pippin! The lawyer made the guy out to be some sort of victim of society and therefore not responsible for his action that night. It was all I could do to keep quiet while this pond life was giving his thumbs up to his pals in the gallery. When given bail by the sheriff he showed his utter lack of respect by saying "nae bother big yin"!!!!!
To ease my anger I worked on the sprint today. New fuel/brake pipe clips and propshaft refitted.
Bill I got his address which was read out in court. He lives no more than 100 yards from my lockup. Any sort of personal retribution would only lower me to his level.

I admire the vast majority of the population of the UK, who also feel like that. I'm afraid I'm not one of them. I don't believe in an eye for and eye. I believe in two eyes for an eye. But I wouldn't want to get caught, everything needs to be planned and thought out. For me revenge is a very sweet dish.

Believe me Bill, nothing would please me more than to see him get what's coming to him, but its more than my jobs worth to risk it!

A very unhappy David

Just an anonymous tipoff to the Polis will do it, he's a druggie, so all you have to say is there are unsavoury types going in and out of his crib at all hours of the day and night and they'll knock HIS door down for you!

Haven't posted anything for a while. The guy that broke into my lockup got sent down for 8 months, so there is some justice.

Anyway as you may recall I have been frustrating myself with the alignment of the front panels and both wings for several months now. But happy to report that despite several attempts which resulted in unsatisfactory and uneven gaps I have finally managed to get them sitting so that they are pretty good all round and I am now ready to permanently fix them in place.
I have raised the question about body flex before and
given the advice I received I was happy the shell was strong and straight, but despite the panels now sitting well, would it be best to have the car on its wheels before final fixing? Or is it ok to still have the front end on axle stands?
I will try to put up a photo of it without panels and one as it sits now.
It has taken me much longer than I expected to get to this stage but progress is still progress!

Thanks

David
