I only just found this thread - I don't know how I missed it. It's great to hear that you are back in the land of Triumph, Ken. It just wasn't the same knowing that you were Triumphless!
This looks like a great little Toledo. The interior looks fantastic. I'm looking forward to reading about how you get on.

Thanks to all re: 'The Head'. Hugely appreciated.

Ah yes, the head. It came off without a whimper. No sheared downpipe studs, no stripped threads or significantly skinned knuckles. The head was secured tightly enough but the manifold nuts were looser than expected, not sure why. The head gasket was looking very old and sorry for itself but there were no obvious damage issues. The head does weigh a bit though doesn't it. My back aches slightly more than usual having to lift if off the block.

Just a couple of the studs in the top of the block have unwound and will need securing when it all goes back together. The piston crowns were heavily carbon coated. I cleaned the very front piston crown up and is is marked 'Stanpart', so probably original perhaps. There are a couple of light scuffs on it and a light'ish score about 5mm long which obviously indicated some kind of impact. The top of the valves appears pretty dirty with some crustiness on them. I will post a piccie as soon as possible. I might take it to my mate to have a look at as I have surpassed my mechanical limits now.

I will also clean the other piston crowns in due course.

Is it ok to put the car in gear and rock it forwards until the middle two pistons pop up so I can clean them? The bores look and feel fine except for a little band of gunk at the very top. It should clean off ok.

I can do mechanic stuff now I can.

Just turn the bottom pulley until the next 2 pistons come up and you will be able to clean them.

A quick tip, if you haven't already, dont clean the edges of the piston crowns or the coke lips from the top of the bores as this helps seal the pistons in the bores and reduce oil consumption/smoking!

Cheers guys. Steve, I have gone close to the edge on the front piston crown but the rest will not be done the same. The ring of stuff on the top of the bores is intact and will stay that way now. Thanks for the tip, I never thought about that.

Is it worth swapping the spring with another, just to test if the valve will seat properly. I do have some springs here (used) if you need any. Can springs harden I wonder?

Also the damage to the head on pic 3, is that on the same as the one with the bad spring, could possibly be a bit of chipped metal between valve and head stopping it from coming up?

My bad, I have the head 'upside down' so to speak. So, the last picture is the first set of valves from the front backwards. The spring in the picture is the second one back from the front. Does that all make sense? Not sure how the head would have chipped like that.

It may be a piece of debris, or a knackered spring or just gummed up. No way of knowing just yet. I will see what my mate thinks of it and report back asap. The offer of a spring might well be taken up Darren. I'll let you know as soon as mate, thanks.

hello mate.. whats the condition of the piston top??? has the valve bin in contact with the piston?? you may be looking at a bent valve :( judgen the look of the spring the way its leaning to the left of the pic
or just abitta crap in the guild, pop the collets and see if the valve slides up and down effortless, if not valve in a drill to check if its bent, personally id remove them all, decoked the chambers and soften the chamber edge and relap the valves,
great project,. and hows the daf???

The first piston top has a couple of marks, each about 3mm in length, but very, very, very shallow. There is a slightly bigger 'scar' on it as well, so it has been in contact with a valve. I think the bent valve scenario is abut right. I never noticed the slight lean on the spring though, well spotted.

The Daf is just dandy, must use it more often though. When the Tolly is up and running, I will put the Daf in the garage and do the various little odds and sods that need doing. Tolly first though.
