Well, it's only taken five years for the engine to get onto the engine stand:

...and this is what I retrieved from the sump:

I'm starting to wonder if the timing chain was low quality as well as the tensioner...?

Re-appraising the play in the jackshaft, locking the longitudinal play on the water pump and distributer gears off, I reckon there's less than 10 thou movement side to side, but it's still about twice the up and down movement. My dilemma is how much is too much? If I do get a PB bearing let into the block, how much tolerance to the jackshaft diameter should I allow?

I will let Alan fill in the full details, but I remember the car when it was owned by a guy from the south coast. I think it was he who 'wafted' a few mods on it - am I right isaying t ran Nox at one stage, hence being nicknamed quick sprint, which was also the chaps user name ob the forum. He was an interstesing chap to talk to, very knowledgeable, he came to a few Oxfordshire meets. I think he emigrated and left the fold. It was a bit of a legend in its time.

That's about it in a nutshell Malc. Steve Martin was his name, mechanic from Pompey. This was the first car to wear the trackerjack conversion, necessary due to the 209 bhp RR report I have.

Twin 45's with nitrous into the manifold, though I now have 48's to replace them with, TT10106 cam, LSD and panhard rod, full cage, 1" lower and higher poundage springs and adjustable shocks, LT77 5 speed 'box. I had to rebuild the engine after purchase, due to a dropped valve on the way home, which saw reversion to standard bore, all moving parts L & B including taking 8lb off the flywheel. I then managed three trips out before the TCT dropped its pad!

Once it's back on the road I'll be getting some serious poundage springs so it will corner better!

Nice Sprint that.
Remember talking to Steve in his garage about this car and others just before it was sold.

Believe it was to the guy (in loose terms :lol: ) that you eventually bought it of Alan.


Be great to see it flying round Castle Combe or the street again.

Steve was indeed a knowledgeable guy and I saw the car in all its glory when he owned it.
It was indeed a minter.

Sadly Steve hasn't kept in touch but it may well be about the time we lost the old forum and went to this
current provider, so his old posts may have got lost.

One nice touch was the bullet racing mirror nicely fitted into the door top trim.

I think the rather ambiguous individual who owned it between took the NOS off.....

The NOS system is still fitted.

The bullet mirrors may look good, but they are next to useless for seeing what is behind you!

Steve emigrated to Florida where he was running a blind fitting company. I was in touch with him for a while, but responses became less frequent and there was a definite air of him wanting to leave his past behind him, so I respected that and ceased correspondence.

Well that filled in a few gaps, Steve Martin it was.

I hadn't remembered the SD1 five speed or the panhard rod.

Steve came up to a few Oxon meets, he was very knoowledgeable and I have half a recollection of him being a 'recovery' patrolman in his time.

I also half recall the tale about the 'chap' you got the car from.....if I recall, you were not sure if there were possibly a few bits missing ?

What about the " Panhard rod " ... Sorry couldn't resist some speech marks.

I was looking at these before and comments on the forum were steering me away from them due to a lack of suitable locating points. Any pictures of your set up Alan ?

This is the Panhard rod set up.

Make sure if you do this you use the XR2 Panhard rod standard Fiesta is just a U shape..
