Hello folks.

Model registers of classic cars can be extremely useful to owners of the respective marque in many ways from simply adding to the story of a car somebody owns, helping prospective purchasers understand more about a car they are considering buying, providing evidence in support of DVLA issues etc. I personally have benefitted from the existence of a TR6 Register when it supported me in identifying and recovering the original registration number of my TR6.

Unlike many classic models the 1850 Dolomites have never had an actual Register of known cars. I have accepted that challenge and started work on the project, but I can’t do it without your help. I need to know about as many 1850s (others are looking after the related models in the range) as possible. If you own one please share the details, but you don’t need to own one to help, if you owned one in the past tell me as much as you remember about it and what happened to it. If you see one for sale, let me know (I will be looking at the main sites regularly but a duplicate report is much better than not having one at all) All intelligence is useful in building a database.

To make this as easy as possible I’ve built a simple form in Google which captures all of the key data points, you don’t need to provide all points, in fact the only mandatory item is the Registration number, the rest is optional, just tell me what you know, it’s all useful.

The form can be found here:-
https://forms.gle/cWsD1AybdT7nzdUu9

I must stress that all data provided is in confidence and will not be shared with any 3rd parties.

You do not need to be a member of any club to make a submission, nor do you have to be located in the UK. The Register is being created for the benefit of all owners past and present.

I also welcome feedback on the form.

I look forward to receiving your submissions.

Thanks

Sean Binks

Hi Sean, I took a look at the form - from my point of view I got as far as "Model" and as a bit of a pedant I got stuck. My cars is a Dolomite and it has an 1850 slant 4 - factory fit. But the model is neither 1850 nor 1850 HL. The model is technically "Dolomite" as it's an early-ish car. At that time there was only this car in the Dolomite Range - no Sprints, no 1500s etc.

Maybe add "Dolomite" to the model drop-down?

Totally get it and not at all pedantic, my logic for going down this route was leaving it as Dolomite would perhaps see owners of other (e.g. OHV) models enter data as there's nothing else to validate its an appropriate entry. Whilst not being totally correct giving the two options I have should hopefully deter anyone but 8V Slant 4 engined cars?

Thanks

Sean

Totally get that Sean, and it's the underlying reason that I'd assumed for the 2 options.

Perhaps the solution to satisfy the pedants among us is to list "Dolomite (1850)" and "Dolomite 1850HL"

Though there were non HL 1500 variants post 76 and the 1300 was not available in HL spec at all, the 1850 alone was ONLY available in HL spec for the latter part of production.

I have a soft spot for the 1850 as my first Dolly was one, a 75 P reg Dolomite in Maple brown with chestnut trim, manual with overdrive and Sundym glass. Unfortunately I only have a few pics of it in the background of photos of other cars, so I only have a partial reg number ??? 354P which probably won't help much! Bought as an MOT failure for the princely sum of £15 in 1989, I sold it on, still MOT'd and taxed and running strong in '93 or '94. Though close to the change point, it was in fact a "Dolomite" not an HL.

One particularly fond memory of it is "accidentally" outrunning a police pursuit Opel Senator for nearly 15 miles! He was so far back for most of it, I hadn't realised he was even THERE (no lights or sirens)! He only caught up to me when I stopped because i'd arrived at work and i'd shut off, got out and walked away by the time he arrived, a little flustered, in the works yard! And anyway, in those days and on my own (rural and largely NSL) "patch" as I was, I had little interest in anything behind me! The cop wasn't impressed (I think by his failure to keep up in a much more powerful car) and administered a giant bol**cking, but there wasn't a lot he could do, he hadn't been close enough to clock me accurately and blustery threats of dangerous driving charges never materialized.
