I have drained the cooling system and found LOADS of rust, silt etc!!! In fact all the hoses need replaced. This is now gone and I refilled the system with anti freeze and water and fresh fuel and after a short idle- 5- 10 mins I took the car for a short drive and it was fine but for lots of moments ...

However what about the sludge on the underside of the oil cap?

Thanks for the quick reply- the water expansion tank just appears full of sludge as opposed to oil- does this mean anything?
