Keevil Track Day

#1 Post by MaddMart » Tue May 16, 2006 2:54 pm

Another great day on the track.

The day didn't start very well weather wise, but the rain did subside by mid morning & stayed dry for the rest of the day.

There was the usual mix of Elises, Tegs, Nobles & the like (and a strange V8 Toyota Starlet) but my car of the day was a Honda NSX, one of the last 12 to be produced.

Anyway, we don't want to know about those. My car went really well and was a fair bit improved with the new 4.1:1 diff. Last time out (with the std. diff.) I was hitting around the ton at the end of the 2 main straights, this time I was hitting 115-120, all indicated of course so I don't know the actual speeds as the diff. & lower profile tyre will put the speedo out by a fair amount I would assume.

Had a good tussle with an Alfa 155 V6, not much in it really until he overheated & was black flagged (he kept going round with steam pouring out from under the bonnet).

Just before going home I tried to start the car & it turned over very slowly. Had a look at the alternator conns. & found one of the leads had broken off & as I was trying to fix it, I broke another one off. I managed to crimp them back on but only just. Then, the first touch on the brake pedal revealed a familiar grinding noise. I managed to get the car home but needless to say I'll be needing a new set of discs & pads and a bit of re-wiring.

All in a days Track event.

Sounds like fun - I might get there eventually.

Just one point. If you haven't changed your speedo drive then at 100 mph you'll now be reading 100x4.1/3.45 = 119!
You lucky bugger!

To correct for the diff:

Real = Indicated / 4.1 * 3.45 = Indicated * 0.841463415

Ind Real
10 8.414634146
20 16.82926829
30 25.24390244
40 33.65853659
50 42.07317073
60 50.48780488
70 58.90243902
80 67.31707317
90 75.73170732
100 84.14634146
110 92.56097561
120 100.9756098
130 109.3902439
140 117.804878

Dunno enough about your tyres to correct for that, plenty of interactive sites on the net for wheel sizing (eg http://www.mintylamb.co.uk)

Edit: Oops, Dave beat me to it!
Thanks for that. Tyres are 185/60/13s.

You gotta get out there & do it. It's such an adrenaline rush. If you've ever been Karting (not quite the same) but you'll know what I mean.

Good effort Martin. I reckon the rapid wearing brakes are due to the forward inclination of your car. Have you got any more rearward bias in it yet?
Get yourself some decent high performance pads too....

How did the little V8 starlet shit box go then? Did Rich manage to keep it facing the right way for a change?

I think it's also due to me hurtling down 2 straights at 100+ mph & slamming on the anchors way past the braking point. but seriously, you're probably right Scott & no it's still sitting as it always has. I'm going for the Mintex jobbies next on a fresh pair of discs.

I didn't really see much of the Starlet. Richard only got there at lunchtime then the car was up on a jack for ages, I did see it going sideways a few times on the top corner as ever. He was out on track at the same time as me once but he never caught or passed me. He said that that was the first time out on track with it so I expect there were teething troubles.

You're right, I have got to

Those tyres make a overread according to the miata tyre site. Here's the values before and after the diff change.
