Buying, owning & maintaining a Dolly Sprint

#1 Post by Graham » Tue Nov 23, 2004 2:52 pm

I've always wanted a Dolly Sprint from a young age. I've seen one advertised for £695, in yellow, and seems in good condition.
I'm a 24 year-old uni student and currently run a 1994 Escort 1.6 LX 16V (with Zetec engine). I was quoted £290 insurance, which is cheaper than the Escort.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">

However, my mother is against the purchase. She thinks that the Dolly would be unsafe because they are old and have dodgy brakes.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

Would this be true? I want to use it as an everyday car, so what would running costs be like? Am I likely to have to chuck a load of money at it, to make it reliable? I don't mind it not being in A1 condition, as I want it as a starter classic, but it must be reliable! I will probably cover about 10,000 miles per year.

Any help/advice would be most appreciated, including how to convince my mum that its not a dodgy 70s car, with limited brakes and high maintenance costs.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Thanks!
