Nearly a Sprint !!!!!!

#1 Post by Donny Matt » Thu Jul 07, 2005 9:41 am

I have recently bought from a friend nearly a sprint!!! Confused?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":"> Afew years ago he aquired a very very solid 1500hl, and i mean solid!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> he then bought a rotten Sprint and did a complete shell swap, and i mean this in every fullness of the word COMPLETE!!. I myself am in the body repair and refinishing trade and i saw what was left! So now i am the owner of a AS GOOD AS sprint, but it lacks a couple of things, and was hoping one of you "hardened to the core" enthusiasts could help with a dilemma. As i set about prepping and repainting car, i am stuck. Should i vinyl the roof or leave it painted?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":"> I know the original sprints were vinyl but not so sure if i would prefer to leave it painted and enjoy waxing the deep gloss shine that it will eventually have. I always apply clearcoat laquer to everything i paint even direct gloss, straight colous as i have in previously restored cars i have done, 66 lotus cortina and 72 rwa midget to name but 2! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> help me in my dilemma because i am losing sleep over it now! may i add before you reply that i intend to USE the car and am not too concerned in showing it and trying to pass it off as a genuine sprint and am just looking forward to other people enjoying the look of it too, as people alredy seem to be doing in its current state while parked on the drive already devoid of interior, trim and all engine ancilleries ready to prep for paint. Also, for some reason i cannot remember, the car does not have sundym glass so may be on the look out for some soon. The car is Inca, VPK 407S. thanks, Matt Durkin, Doncaster

If you prefer the look of a painted roof, go for it. It's your car after all and you can always cover it with vinyl afterwards.
Personally I think vinyl roofs look bl**dy awful, some people won`t agree, if you are not so bothered with originality like my self you could always make it two tone. I have just done this on my Brooklands Green 1850 HL, it now has a black roof right down the windscreen surround where it meets the bonnet and also down down the rear pillars, on an HL these should be vinyl. Some people will hate it but to be honest I don`t care and think it looks great, a new windscreen seal and insert complete the new look.

Im not new to the classis car thing as you read from my first post, however, as i am new to the dolly brigade i was worried that the purists out there would frown upon not doing the vinyl for the sake of originality!!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:"> i am pleasantly surprised<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> that your views on them are like my own. Being in the body repair game, it was common in the seventies that if you had an unfortunate occasion to go "roof surfing"<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":("> or "ditch discovering"<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o"> that a quick skim of "panels-in-a-tin" and a vinyl roof did the trick, was always wary of a car with a black top!!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":"> . This brings on my next daring thing to ask......... .......look up the swiss sprint in the gallery and tell me what you think to his roof, i am so taken by it..... i think it has to be, including losing the pillar vinyls? Cheers, real happy to be part of the crowd.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I like that Swiss Sprint so much, I'm seriously considering painting my roof the same way.

Just not too sure what colour to spray the body. Recently saw a nice MGB GT (with sundym glass) in non metallic grey. It might look good on the Dolomite.
Audi now have a 'Dolomite Grey' which perversely resembles highly polished primer. I think it would look great on a Sprint...against the contrasting black vinyl roof of course.

The vinyl is (in my consideration) a very important trompe l'oeil which together with the black cills lowers the visual line of the car considerably.
