do i buy a sprint with an oil leak?

hiya all

I'm after a bit of advice, ive seen a dolomite 1850 with a sprint engine in it for sale, love the look of the car and really want it, but there is oil leaking from the front crankshaft oil seal, is this a big job?
ive phoned 2 triumph places and 1 says its an engine out job costing hundreds, the other said it was very easy and should be no more than £50 which one is right?
so any input would be most helpfull as i really like the car but don't have the money for any large repair costs.

many thanks
Re: do i buy a sprint with an oil leak?
if the crankshaft oil seal is the one in the timing cover then its easy enough to do yourself. Radiator out, crank pulley off (have to jam the flywheel which probably means starter off to jam the fly wheel with a chisel or similar) timing chain cover off, pop out old oil seal, put in new one, reasemble...

Hi jon and welcome.

If that oil leak is the only bad thing you can find with the car snatch it up! The garage that said it's an engine out job is speaking from an orifice at the wrong end of the body.
You don't take the starter out to remove the crank pulley, you use it to undo the nut.
Once...
you've bought it then start a thread in the main section and we'll tell you how to do it and change the timing chain. guides and tensioner at the same time...unless they are newish...

And yes it isnt a difficult job...removing the crank pulley nut is the worst bit and we have some tricks to do that...
Re: do i buy a sprint with an oil leak?
Hello all. I read about a pulley nut removal in this thread. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for removing the nut on my Mk3 spitfire engine. I put the car in 4th gear, set the handbrake, blocked the wheels, and put a socket on the nut with a 4 foot long cheater bar. Nothing. I got it very tight and smacked the socket wrench with a hammer and nothing.

Ive read about starter removal and locking the flywheel. Any other suggestions? I'd rather not remove the gearbox to lock the flywheel, if possible.
thanks for the help!
Hi Marty.
Check the direction of rotation first but on most cars you can use the starter motor. First, remove the king lead. Then put your socket and bar on and turn the engine in the direction of normal rotation until the bar is on the ground or the chassis. Then blip the starter.

Good luck
Don't...
put that sort of load thrugh the transmission as you can break gear teeth off.

If the starter wont crack it open for you you will have to remove it and lock the ring gear with a big flat blade screwdriver. The starter is easy to get off on a Spit...2 9/16 bolts.
Re: do i buy a sprint with an oil leak?
thanks for the help. I removed the starter and put a wrench on the crank pulley nut, aplied a great deal of pressure, and pop, easy peasey.

I replaced the timing chain and gears. It seemed difficult to get it set right, but after getting it back together, it started right up. Only needed a slight timing adjustment. I am a little disapointed that it isn't running very much better than it was. Especially since the old timing chain was very slack.

I'll tune the carbs, set the rocker clearances and see.
